SEBASTIAN SMITH JAILED FOR RAPE IN GWENT
A man identified as Sebastian Smith has been sentenced to prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting a woman during an unsettling incident that took place while they were together watching a war film on Netflix. The horrifying ordeal occurred in Brynmawr, Gwent, where Smith, aged 26, forcibly restrained his victim on a bed, disregarding her pleas and screams for him to cease his attack.According to court reports, after the assault, Smith begged the woman not to report the incident to the police. During the trial, the prosecution revealed that the woman expressed her distress to her attacker, saying, “I feel sick to the stomach. I told you to stop.” In response, Smith reportedly replied, “I done wrong. I really hate myself,” and pleaded with her not to involve law enforcement, claiming, “Please don’t go the police. I’m begging you. I’m shaking like a leaf. I’m dying here myself.”
The court heard that Smith, who resides on George Street, was found guilty of both rape and sexual assault by penetration. He had denied all allegations prior to the trial. When arrested in 2020, Smith provided a prepared statement to police, claiming that the encounter was consensual, asserting that the woman initiated the kissing and sexual contact. He claimed that they were play fighting and kissing, during which she reportedly touched him between his legs. Smith alleged that he inserted his penis into her, but he insisted she said “No,” and that once she voiced her refusal, he immediately ceased the act.
The prosecution highlighted a recorded 999 call made by the woman shortly after the assault, in which she recounted the distressing events. She told emergency services, “I went to his house to watch a film. He put his hand down my trousers. I told him to stop it.” She also described her reaction, saying, “I did touch him and said to him, ‘How would you like it if I touched you?’ I told him I didn’t want to do it. He pinned me down on the bed and pulled down my trousers.”
Following the trial at Cardiff Crown Court, Smith was sentenced to five years and five months in prison. In addition to his incarceration, he will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, reflecting the severity of his conviction and the impact of his actions on the victim.
