SEAN ROBINSON BRUTAL ATTACK IN SUNDERLAND: RAPE AND VIOLENCE SHOCK COMMUNITY

In January 2023, a harrowing incident unfolded in Sunderland that left the local community shaken and deeply concerned about safety and justice.

A young woman, in her twenties, was subjected to a terrifying ordeal that involved both violent assault and sexual violence, all triggered by a brutal attack on her date.

According to court proceedings, the incident began as the woman and her date were walking home together after their first date in the summer of 2021.

As they approached a bypass near the University metro station, they suddenly heard shouting behind them.

Without any warning or provocation, Sean Robinson launched a vicious assault on the man, launching multiple punches and attempting to escape.

Despite the man's clear attempts to avoid conflict, Robinson pursued him relentlessly, catching up and delivering a severe blow to the face, followed by relentless kicks that left the victim exhausted, bleeding, and unconscious on the ground.

Witnesses and the court heard that Robinson's violence did not cease there.

He continued his assault, kicking the man in the head while he was down, causing him to lose consciousness.

During this chaos, the woman watched in horror as her date was left battered and unconscious.

Robinson then turned his attention to her, threatening her with death if she did not comply with his demands.

In a desperate bid to save her friend's life, she was coerced into having sex with Robinson.

The court was told that Robinson, then only 17 years old, forced her to lie on an old coat found near some bushes and raped her, all while she was crying and pleading for him to stop.

Prosecutor Jane Waugh described the victim's ordeal as sickening and emphasized her bravery in enduring such trauma.

She explained that the woman, in an effort to protect her friend and herself from Robinson's unpredictable violence, decided to comply with his demands.

Robinson, during the assault, told her, “If you stop I will go and kill him,” revealing the extent of his threats and violence.

The victim was crying throughout the attack, and Robinson reportedly told her to “shut up and stop being a baby,” as he continued his assault.

Following the attack, Robinson told the woman he would leave her alone if she agreed to go to his house.

Fortunately, she managed to contact her parents, who responded swiftly by alerting the police and arriving at the scene.

Her parents found her waiting with the unconscious man, and their arrival prompted Robinson to flee the area.

The victim’s father threatened Robinson, saying, “I’m going to f****** kill you,” and a physical altercation ensued before Robinson ran off and was later apprehended by police.

Robinson was subsequently taken into custody, and it was only at the hospital that the attacked man learned of the rape.

Both victims suffered significant physical injuries and ongoing psychological trauma.

In a heartfelt victim statement, the woman described her experience as the “worst of my life,” recounting how she has been haunted by the trauma, feeling “stuck reliving the traumatic experience over and over again, becoming a prisoner in my own head.” She expressed her pain and grief, noting that the court delays and Robinson’s initial denial of the rape worsened her suffering.

However, she found some solace in the fact that Robinson was eventually convicted and sentenced.

Judge Stephen Earl described Robinson as a “dangerous” individual and sentenced him to five years in prison, with an extended three-year license period, sex offender registration, and a lifelong restraining order to protect the victims.

The judge condemned the attack as “abominable,” emphasizing its “catastrophic” impact on the victims.

He highlighted that Robinson’s threats and violence had left the woman with no choice but to comply in order to protect her friend’s life, noting the severity of the assault and the defendant’s awareness of his own brutality.

In conclusion, the court’s ruling aimed to reflect the gravity of the crimes committed and the lasting harm inflicted on the victims.

Robinson, now 18, admitted to assault and rape charges, and his conviction serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by such violent offenders in Sunderland and beyond.
