Wakefield Child Abuser
A man has been sentenced to prison following a brutal and unprovoked assault on a sleeping child in Wakefield.

Sean Deering, 37 years old, pleaded guilty to one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm in relation to an incident in Wakefield during June 2020.

He appeared at Leeds Crown Court on Friday, January 17, where he was sentenced to a total of three years and 11 months behind bars.

Detective Constable Sally Hayward of the Wakefield Child Safeguarding Unit stated, “The child victim sustained multiple injuries after being woken from sleep by Deering in the early hours. He then attacked the child by hitting and stamping on their face, in what can only be described as a vicious and unprovoked assault on a defenseless child. When the child's mother discovered the injuries, Deering had already fled the scene.”

Deering’s sentence included time for this particular offence and an additional four months due to him being on a suspended sentence for an unrelated crime.

DC Hayward commented, “Deering has demonstrated the threat he poses to children. This case involved a very young victim and was complex, but through extensive investigations, we ensured that Deering was held accountable for his actions. I hope the victim’s family finds some reassurance in the court’s sentence.”
