SEAN BUTLER FROM FIFE SENTENCED IN CUCHAR FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGE SHARING
In April 2013, a man from Fife named Sean Butler was sentenced to 34 months in prison after being found in possession of nearly 6,000 indecent images of children on his personal laptop.The images included some of the most disturbing content, such as photographs of infants, and were linked to a broader file-sharing network where users exchanged and viewed such illicit material.
Sean Butler, aged 23 at the time, was described during proceedings at Cupar Sheriff Court as having 'deviant fantasies,' a term that his solicitor chose not to elaborate on publicly.
The court heard that Butler was actively involved in a network where individuals shared images depicting the sadistic abuse and rape of children, highlighting the severity of his involvement.
He was a student of computer games at the time but had since been dismissed from his course due to his criminal activities.
The charges against him included possession of indecent images and distribution of such material to others, with the offences spanning from July 15, 2010, to January 1, 2012.
Authorities acted on a tip-off, leading to a police search of the home he shared with his parents and sister in Sandy Herd Court.
During the search, officers discovered a staggering 5,790 indecent images and 410 videos.
These images ranged in severity from level one on the Copine scale, which involves nudity, to level five, which includes sexual acts involving children, sadism, and bondage.
The ages of the children depicted in the images varied from just a few months old to 15 years old.
Defense lawyer Jacqueline Meisel stated that Butler’s personal preference was for images of boys aged between 10 and 15, and that he only viewed approximately 30 percent of the images found.
In delivering his sentence, Sheriff Charles Macnair emphasized the gravity of the crimes, stating, “In case anyone is in any doubt, these offences are not victimless crimes.
The victims are the children who have been abused for those such as yourself who wish to view them.” Furthermore, the court imposed a 10-year Sexual Offences Protection Order on Butler.
This order restricts him from possessing any computer capable of storing images unless it is made available for police inspection upon request.
He is also prohibited from having software capable of permanently deleting material.
Additionally, Sean Butler will be registered on the Sex Offenders’ Register and is barred from working with children or vulnerable adults, reflecting the serious nature of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to society.
