SCOTT SUMNER CAUGHT IN COVENTRY AND NEARBY NUNEATON HOTEL SCANDAL

In May 2019, a disturbing case involving Scott Sumner, a resident of Coventry, unfolded in Warwickshire, highlighting the serious issues surrounding child exploitation and grooming.

Sumner, aged 33 and residing on Armson Road in Exhall, admitted to engaging in inappropriate and illegal activities involving a young boy he had met through online gaming platforms.

The case came to light after colleagues at the Holiday Inn in Nuneaton, where Sumner was employed as a night receptionist, observed CCTV footage that revealed him cuddling and engaging in questionable behavior with a 14-year-old boy.

Sumner faced multiple charges, including child abduction—specifically taking the boy away from his parents' care—and sexual activity with a minor.

Additionally, he admitted to downloading an indecent video featuring a child, further compounding the severity of his offenses.

The proceedings took place at Warwick Crown Court, where Judge Peter Cooke presided over the case.

During the hearing, the judge acknowledged the gravity of the situation, noting that Sumner had come 'perilously close' to being sentenced to prison.

Despite the serious nature of the allegations, Sumner was sentenced to 18 months in prison, but this sentence was suspended for two years.

The court also mandated that he participate in a sex offender rehabilitation program and engage in other activities aimed at reform.

Furthermore, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for a decade, reflecting the ongoing concern for public safety and the potential risk posed by his actions.

The timeline of events dates back to between January and May 2017, although delays in the case arose due to extensive evidence review, including CCTV footage seized from the Holiday Inn in Nuneaton.

The victim, a boy aged between 13 and 14 at the time, was a resident of Gloucestershire, approximately 90 miles from Coventry.

The boy and Sumner had initially connected through an Xbox Live online gaming group, which later transitioned into more direct communication via Facebook after the boy received a mobile phone for his 14th birthday.

Evidence showed that Sumner was aware of the boy’s age, as reflected in messages exchanged with a colleague at work, where he remarked, “That 13-year-old is still trying to get me to meet him.” His colleague warned him, saying, “Mate, it just screams paedo-hunter,” to which Sumner responded, “Don’t worry, I ain’t.

Just Xbox.” Despite this, Sumner traveled to Gloucestershire twice—once by motorbike—to meet the boy in person.

Their outings included a cinema visit and a trip to Tintern Abbey, indicating a pattern of increasingly intimate meetings.

In May 2017, the boy told his mother he planned to spend the night at a friend’s house, but instead, he met with Sumner, who had parked his motorbike near the boy’s home.

The two then traveled back to Sumner’s residence in Exhall, where they spent the remainder of the day in his bedroom, watching television and playing computer games.

Around 10 pm, as Sumner prepared to go to work, he took the boy with him to the hotel.

During the early hours, when the hotel reception was quiet, CCTV footage captured the boy lying across Sumner, who was hugging him and stroking his hair and back, with his hand touching the boy’s leg.

The footage showed no sexual activity or removal of clothing during this time.

After Sumner’s shift ended, they returned to his home, where he took a shower.

The two fell asleep in his bedroom, with Sumner wearing boxer shorts.

No sexual contact occurred in the bedroom, and later that day, Sumner drove the boy home, having been away for approximately 28 hours.

The hotel colleagues, concerned about the CCTV footage, reported their observations to management, which led to police involvement.

When officers arrested Sumner, they discovered a memory card in his video camera containing a seven-minute video of two underage boys engaged in sexual activity.

The boy later told police that there had been no sexual touching beyond ‘some hugging,’ and that Sumner had accidentally touched him between his legs, for which he apologized.

The court heard that while nothing sexual happened at Sumner’s home, the behavior was still highly inappropriate and illegal.

Judge Cooke emphasized that although the contact appeared innocent, the underlying issue was the sexual attraction involved.

He pointed out that Sumner, as a gay man, was entitled to his sexuality, but that his actions mirrored those of a heterosexual man forming a relationship with a 14-year-old girl, which is equally unacceptable.

Judge Cooke acknowledged that the incident at the hotel was ‘at the bottom of the range of seriousness,’ and expressed some optimism that Sumner had learned his lesson.

Nonetheless, he made it clear that Sumner had come ‘perilously close’ to imprisonment, underscoring the gravity of his misconduct and the importance of ongoing monitoring and rehabilitation.
