SCOTT SLY OF HARTLEPOOL SENTENCED FOR DECADES-OLD SEXUAL OFFENCES IN SUNDERLAND
A man from Hartlepool, Scott Sly, has finally been held accountable for a series of serious sexual offences committed over twenty years ago, after the victim found the courage to come forward and report the abuse.According to court proceedings at Newcastle Crown Court, Sly, who was residing in the Sunderland area at the time, subjected a school-aged girl to repeated acts of sexual violence, including rape and indecent assault.
These offences took place more than two decades ago, but the impact on the survivor remained profound and long-lasting.
It was only after many years that the brave survivor decided to report the abuse to the police, which ultimately led to Sly’s arrest and prosecution.
When questioned during police interviews, Sly, now aged 32, denied any involvement or wrongdoing.
Despite his denials, authorities proceeded with charges against him in January of the previous year.
In March of this year, Sly appeared before the court to face trial, maintaining his innocence throughout the proceedings.
However, the jury found him guilty of all ten charges brought against him, which included rape, indecent assault, and sexual assault.
The verdict marked a significant moment of justice for the survivor, who had endured years of silence.
On the day of sentencing, which took place on Friday, Sly was sentenced to a decade in prison.
The court also ordered that he be registered as a sex offender for the remainder of his life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions.
Additionally, the victim was granted an indefinite restraining order, legally prohibiting Sly from contacting or approaching her in any capacity.
This case underscores the importance of perseverance and courage in seeking justice for victims of sexual abuse, regardless of how much time has passed since the offences occurred.
