SASH MAZOUZ SENTENCED TO 14 MONTHS IN KENT AFTER ASSAULT IN CANTERBURY
A man from Folkestone, identified as Sash Mazouz, has been sentenced to 14 months in prison following a serious assault that took place in Canterbury City centre.The incident occurred on Sunday, 19 June 2022, when Mazouz, aged 45 and residing on Charlotte Street in Folkestone, targeted a man by following him into a public restroom situated on Canterbury Lane.
According to reports, as the victim was exiting a cubicle within the public toilet, Mazouz unexpectedly pushed him back inside and attempted to carry out a sexual assault.
Fortunately, the victim was able to escape before the situation could develop further, and he promptly contacted the police to report the incident.
Law enforcement officers responded quickly to the scene, where they located and apprehended Mazouz.
During his arrest, he displayed inappropriate behaviour, repeatedly attempting to engage in offensive language directed at a male police officer who was present.
These actions led to further charges being considered.
Mazouz faced legal proceedings for the incident and was formally charged with committing an offence with intent to commit a sexual offence, along with a charge of assault.
He admitted guilt to both charges in court.
On 12 January 2023, Mazouz appeared before Canterbury Crown Court, where a judge sentenced him to a total of 14 months imprisonment.
It is noted that part of his sentence has already been served while he was on remand, meaning he has already spent a significant period in custody prior to sentencing.
Additionally, as part of the conditions following his release, Mazouz will be subject to notification requirements for a period of ten years, which is a standard measure for sexual offenders to monitor their whereabouts and activities.
The investigation was led by Detective Constable Ella Russell from the Canterbury Vulnerability Investigation Team.
She expressed her appreciation for the bravery shown by the victim in reporting the offences, which facilitated a swift police response.
Her statement emphasized the police’s commitment to addressing allegations of assault seriously and ensuring justice is served.
Detective Constable Russell stated, ‘I would like to thank the victim for his bravery in reporting these offences and supporting the prosecution.
As a result of this, we were able to make a swift arrest and ensured that Mazouz faced the consequences of his actions.
