A man responsible for kidnapping a woman and subjecting her to five instances of rape has been sentenced to 24 years in prison.
The victim was on her way to work when Samuel Dodsworth, aged 36 and from Grange Street, Derby, approached her with a sharp can opener, threatened her, and compelled her to accompany him to his residence.
Dodsworth pleaded guilty to charges including kidnapping, false imprisonment, and five counts of rape.
During sentencing at Derby Crown Court, Judge Shaun Smith QC referred to the case as "the most appalling" he had encountered.
He remarked: "You have devastated her life.
It is beyond the court’s capacity to fully comprehend her suffering." Prosecutor David Lee told the court that Dodsworth had threatened his 52-year-old victim with a can opener around 7:45 a.m.
on September 3 at a park.
He then took her to his flat, forcing her upstairs while pressing the weapon against her neck.
Dodsworth raped her five times before falling asleep, which enabled her to escape.
She managed to reach a friend's house around 10:40 a.m., at which point police were contacted.
Officers found Dodsworth asleep at his home and arrested him.
In interview, Dodsworth claimed he had been heavily intoxicated and had no recollection of the victim, the court was told.
The victim described her ordeal in a statement, saying, "I thought I was going to die in there.
"I can't get the thought out of my head of him.
I can still see and smell him.
"Since the attack I feel shaky and a nervous wreck.
I constantly scrub myself.
I also wash my clothes every day." Expressing her despair, she said, "I have thought about jumping off a bridge to end this nightmare." Dawn Pritchard, defending, said Dodsworth had substance misuse problems, an extensive psychiatric history and was "repulsed" by his actions.
