TIDWORTH SOLDIER SENTENCED FOR ATTEMPTING CHILD SEX MEETING
A Tidworth soldier named Samuel Dallow, aged 25, was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison at Winchester Crown Court for attempting to meet an underage girl for sex.Dallow believed he was communicating with a 14-year-old girl named Emma online and had groomed her over several weeks to arrange a meeting.
The incident escalated when Dallow traveled to Andover train station on April 11 to meet her.
Upon arrival, he was confronted by Shane Brannigan, a vigilante paedophile hunter, who filmed the encounter and broadcast it live on social media.
Brannigan possessed copies of messages Dallow had sent to the girl, which he used to confront and question the offender.Dallow initially claimed he was 'meeting a friend,' but Brannigan pressed him for honesty.
Brannigan reviewed the messages with Dallow, who admitted that they were inappropriate, stating, 'No, they're not.' The vigilante branded Dallow as 'scum of the earth' and contacted police.
Dallow admitted in court to attempting to meet a teenage girl with the intent of sexual assault.
The court's judge described Dallow as a "dangerous offender" and a high risk to girls aged twelve to sixteen, citing a behavioral report.
The judge emphasized that, although Emma was not real and no harm was caused to her, Dallow’s actions involved sending images of himself and explicitly communicating desires to engage in sexual acts with a minor.The incident underscores the ongoing debate about vigilante justice, with authorities warning that such actions can hinder police investigations and potentially put children at greater risk.
Chief Constable Simon Bailey pointed out that vigilante efforts can allow suspects to destroy evidence, and the NSPCC stressed the importance of leaving investigations to professionals, highlighting the dangers of public interference which can drive offenders underground or cause innocent people to be harassed.
The NSPCC provided a helpline for concerns about child safety, emphasizing the importance of official intervention over vigilante measures.
