SAMUEL BRANTHWAITE FROM BURY ST EDMUNDS FACES JAIL OVER CHILD INDECENT IMAGES

In July 2022, a man from Bury St Edmunds named Samuel Branthwaite, aged 30, admitted to possessing a significant collection of indecent images of children and engaging in the distribution of such material over the internet. The case came to light after police executed a search warrant at his residence, following credible information that his email account had been used to upload illegal images to online platforms.

According to the proceedings at Suffolk Magistrates’ Court, law enforcement officers carried out the raid on October 5, 2021, at Branthwaite’s home on Ashwell Road in Bury St Edmunds. During the operation, officers seized multiple electronic devices, which were later subjected to detailed forensic analysis. It was during this examination that Branthwaite confessed to the offences in question, providing authorities with an initial admission of guilt.

The investigation uncovered a disturbing cache of images stored on his devices. Specifically, 822 images classified as Category A, indicating the most severe form of indecency, were found. Additionally, 803 images fell into Category B, and 649 images were categorized as Category C, representing varying degrees of severity in terms of illegal content. The authorities also discovered that Branthwaite was actively involved in sharing these images with others via the internet.

Further inquiries revealed that he had sent multiple indecent images to a user known as “JohnJohn999000” through the messaging platform Kik. The images included five Category A, two Category B, and two Category C images. Moreover, Branthwaite distributed one Category A image and two Category B images to other individuals through the messaging app Wickr. The investigation also uncovered a total of 179 prohibited images of children and an additional 80 extreme pornographic images involving animals, highlighting the disturbing nature of his online activities.

On the day of his court appearance, Branthwaite pleaded guilty to eight charges, which included three counts of making indecent images of children, three counts of distributing such images, possession of prohibited images, and possession of extreme pornographic material involving animals. The prosecution, led by Katherine Emms, indicated that the starting point for sentencing such offences would typically be three years in custody. She expressed her concern that the magistrates’ sentencing powers might not be sufficient to adequately address the severity of the crimes.

As a result, the magistrates declined to pass sentence and instead committed the case to Ipswich Crown Court for a more appropriate hearing. They also ordered a pre-sentence report from the Probation Service to assist in determining the appropriate punishment. Branthwaite remains on conditional bail while awaiting sentencing, which is scheduled to take place at Ipswich Crown Court on a date yet to be fixed. Additionally, he is now subject to interim notification requirements, meaning he must register with authorities as a sex offender following his guilty pleas.
