CHESTERFIELD'S SAM MELLOR SENTENCED FOR SHARING SEXUAL IMAGES IN REVENGE PLOT

In April 2021, the disturbing case of Sam Mellor, a 22-year-old man from Chesterfield, came to light through a court hearing that revealed a pattern of controlling and malicious behavior towards his former girlfriend.

Mellor’s actions, driven by jealousy and anger following their breakup, culminated in the distribution of intimate images of his ex, causing significant distress and fear.

According to court records, Mellor had shared explicit photographs of his ex-girlfriend—who cannot be named for legal reasons—on social media platforms.

The images were sent in a moment of revenge, after Mellor had blackmailed her with the photos, demanding sex in exchange for not exposing them.

The victim, who was only 17 at the time, was coerced into meeting Mellor for sexual activity, believing she was doing so out of her own volition.

During the trial, it was revealed that Mellor showed her that the images had been deleted from his iPhone both before and after their sexual encounter.

However, he had already backed up the photographs onto another device, betraying his promise to delete them.

The following day, on March 23, 2018, Mellor took the step of sharing these images with others.

He sent the photographs via WhatsApp, iPhone messages, and Facebook to a group of friends, spreading the material further and intensifying the victim’s distress.

Despite being acquitted of the charge of rape during the trial, Mellor admitted to distributing the sexual images with the intent to cause emotional harm and to intimidate witnesses.

His actions led to an 18-month prison sentence.

During sentencing, Nottingham Recorder Balraj Bhatia QC addressed the court, emphasizing the impact of Mellor’s actions on his young victim.

He stated, “I remember during your trial how distressing it was for her having to live with that exposure in a relatively small community where she was known and to have all of her images put on social media.

The anxiety it caused — she was still so young.” The court also heard that Mellor’s victim was only 15 when their relationship began, which lasted for approximately two years.

During this period, she sent Mellor around 200 images at his request, a practice that the court described as all too common but deeply harmful.

Recorder Bhatia described Mellor as immature, controlling, and extremely jealous, noting that he sought to dominate her and maintain power through the exchange of sexual images.

The relationship was marked by manipulation and coercion, with Mellor demanding images and threatening her if she attempted to report him.

When the victim eventually reported Mellor to the police, he responded with threats, warning her, “if this goes to court I know people in Chesterfield who are real nutters who will go for you.” The court heard that Mellor made it clear that unless she complied with his demands, he would distribute her images on social media platforms.

Despite her efforts to distance herself, Mellor’s revenge and anger led him to disseminate the images even after she expressed her desire to end the relationship.

Judge Bhatia indicated that he would normally impose an immediate custodial sentence.

However, Mellor, of Romford Way, Barrow Hill, had already served the equivalent of 34 months under an electronic curfew, which resulted in his release.

The judge remarked, “You have effectively served your sentence,” acknowledging the time already spent in detention.

Mellor’s actions have left a lasting impact on his victim, highlighting the serious consequences of such malicious behavior in the digital age.
