MAN STABBED HIS PARTNER REPEATEDLY

A man who repeatedly stabbed his partner and struck her with a plate after trapping her inside their home has been sentenced to more than two years in prison.

Sam Mason, aged 37, became violent while intoxicated at his residence in York following a wedding attended by a relative of his, a court heard.

Prosecutor Brooke Morrison told York Crown Court that upon returning from the wedding, the victim and another woman arrived at the house in Greenwood Grove to find Mason waiting outside.

What ensued was an outbreak of extreme violence during which the victim feared for her life.

Mason retrieved a kitchen knife and used it to cut his own wrists.

When a relative of Mason’s tried to call for help, he pushed her down and then seized her as she attempted to escape.

He confiscated her phone, stamped on it repeatedly, and eventually submerged it in a bucket of water.

He then forced her out of the back door, locking it behind her, leaving him alone with his partner.

He first hit her with a plate, then punched her multiple times, and pulled her back when she tried to run to the front door.

He also slashed both arms with a kitchen knife and injured himself.

Meanwhile, the other woman, locked out in the street, alerted a neighbour, who called emergency services.

When police arrived, they found Mason’s partner screaming for help from an upstairs window.

Mason was at the top of the stairs and refused to come down.

He then appeared to collapse, and officers provided first aid, though it’s suspected he was feigning collapse.

Both Mason and his partner were taken to hospital.

Mason, who had lost a significant amount of blood from self-inflicted wrist cuts, refused further treatment and was discharged, while his partner remained overnight due to multiple injuries including a head haematoma, cuts, swelling, bruising, and bruising to her fingers.

She was released the next morning after her cuts were glued.

Mason, of Hatfield Walk, York, was initially charged with strangulation and wounding with intent, along with assault causing actual bodily harm and phone damage.

He denied these charges but later pleaded guilty to lesser charges of wounding without intent and common assault, prior to his trial.

The prosecution dropped the original charges.

Mason was sentenced to two years and three months in prison, with an additional three months for breaching a previous suspended sentence.

He will serve two-thirds of this time before potential early release based on parole assessments.

Following release, Mason faces a four-year extended licence period as a dangerous offender.

Additionally, a seven-year restraining order prohibits him from contacting the victim or visiting her residence.
