MAN JAILED AFTER RAPING YOUNG WOMAN
A man has been sentenced to seven years in prison after being convicted of raping a young woman while she was asleep following a night out.Sam Layne, previously residing on Albert Street in Banbury, was handed the sentence at Oxford Crown Court on June 10.
The 41-year-old defendant had entered a plea of not guilty to a single charge of rape, which authorities said occurred in Banbury during the early hours of February 15, 2023.
Despite this, a jury found him guilty earlier this year following a trial.
The court was told that the assault took place in Layne’s flat after a night spent socializing in Banbury.
The complainant, on Valentine’s Day, had been playing darts at the Dog and Gun pub and billiards at the Horse and Jockey.
She ended up at Layne’s residence in the early morning hours and fell asleep.
When she awoke, she accused Layne of raping her.
Prosecutor Edward Lucas stated, 'The defendant poses a high risk of serious harm to women.
There was a significant breach of trust.
The rape happened while she was unconscious, preventing her from defending herself.
The trauma has had a lasting effect on the victim.' Layne received a seven-year prison term.
Additionally, he was subjected to a sexual harm prevention order lasting 15 years, with notification obligations imposed indefinitely.
A restraining order was also issued, prohibiting him from contacting the victim until further notice.
