POLICE OFFICER RYTIS GILYS JAILED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT
A police officer has been jailed after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a colleague while on duty.PC Rytis Gilys, 33, was sentenced to six months in jail after fondling the policewoman's leg in a car while they were parked on a quiet road.
The Met Police officer, who served in Newham borough, was cleared of assaulting three more women by a jury at Southwark Crown Court.
The offence took place in late 2013, when the Lithuanian-born police officer telephoned the colleague to offer her the opportunity to attend a vehicle seizure with him.
The junior colleague accepted and whilst parked on a quiet street, he began talking inappropriately about sex.
He then proceeded to touch her leg on two occasions; both times the victim pushed his hands away.
Gilys also moved his hand towards her belt, but the victim rejected his advances.
Complaints were made by the victim to her supervisor, leading to an investigation by the Directorate of Professional Standards.
Gilys was suspended from duty during this period.
Following the investigation, he was convicted and sentenced at Southwark Crown Court.
The judge said: "As a serving police constable, behaving in the way you did, can only be dealt with by an immediate custodial sentence." Directorate of Professional Standards Commander Chief Superintendent Matt Gardner stated: "PC Gilys abused the trust placed in him as a police officer and used his seniority in service to abuse a junior colleague." In conclusion, the article states: "No one should have to suffer such behaviour in any circumstances but for a police officer to behave in this way is even more disgraceful." A misconduct review will now be carried out to determine further disciplinary action.
