A disturbing case of voyeurism has led to the incarceration of Ryan Maddock following his invasive and gross violation of a woman’s privacy in York.Maddock was found guilty of installing a hidden camera in the victim’s home and secretly watching her for over a month and a half.
The incident unraveled in Warrington when the victim noticed irregularities during her routine activities.
In March of the previous year, she was preparing a meal at her residence when a sudden electrical trip interrupted her cooking.
Upon restoring the power, she observed a small flashing light in her bedroom.
Curious and concerned, she carefully examined the source of the illumination and discovered a tiny, concealed camera positioned near her bed.
The shock and subsequent feelings of violation were profound, as this device had been recording her movements— including her leaving the shower and lying in bed.
The victim immediately unplugged the camera upon discovery, but the emotional trauma it caused was significant.
An impact statement from her revealed that the experience left her crying, shocked, and terrified, fundamentally damaging her sense of safety within her own home.
The police were promptly contacted, and during their investigation, they seized Maddock’s mobile phone.
Analysis of his device uncovered downloaded images and footage that had been captured by the hidden camera, depicting the woman in various vulnerable moments, such as coming out of the shower and resting in bed.
It was established through evidence presented in court that Maddock had installed the device deliberately to spy on the woman, and his covert surveillance had been ongoing for approximately six weeks.
Law enforcement authorities detailed the extensive planning Maddock undertook to conceal the camera, including its placement in a way that ensured it would remain hidden from view.
During the hearing at Warrington Magistrates Court, Maddock, aged 28, admitted to installing the camera.
His defense lawyer, Stephen Coupe, acknowledged that Maddock’s actions constituted a severe breach of privacy and dignity, but he also highlighted Maddock’s previously clean criminal record, good character, and the fact that his guilty plea demonstrated remorse and honesty.
The lawyer also referenced Maddock’s learning difficulties and ADHD, suggesting these factors might have influenced his judgment.
The court was tasked with determining appropriate sentencing, considering whether Maddock’s custody could be suspended.
Mr.
Coupe explained that the probation service recommended a robust community-based penalty, citing Maddock’s candidness and the potential for rehabilitation, which could mitigate future risks.
Nevertheless, Magistrate John Nelson underscored the seriousness of the offense, emphasizing that this was not an ordinary case.
The magistrates debated whether to escalate the matter to the Crown Court but ultimately decided to proceed with sentencing in the magistrates' court.
It was made clear that the court would not suspend the prison term.
Ryan Maddock, whose address is listed as St Johns Grove in Kirk Hammerton, near York, was sentenced to six months in prison.
Additionally, he is required to adhere to sex offender notification requirements for a period of seven years.
A restraining order was also imposed, forbidding him from contacting the victim or entering a specific street in Warrington for five years.
Furthermore, the court ordered the confiscation and destruction of the hidden camera to prevent further incidents of this nature.
