RYAN JOHNSTON AND SHOCKING SEXUAL OFFENSES IN LONDON
A deeply disturbing case involving a sex offender named Ryan Johnston has come to light, revealing a series of heinous acts committed in London that have left a lasting impact on the victims and the community.Johnston, aged 37 and currently held at HMP Thameside in Greenwich, was convicted of multiple serious charges following a comprehensive investigation by the British Transport Police (BTP).
The court proceedings culminated in Johnston being sentenced to nine years in prison at the Inner London Crown Court on December 8.
In addition to his prison term, he was subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and was mandated to register as a sex offender for life.
The conviction was based on a jury’s unanimous verdict, which found him guilty of one count of rape, one count of attempted rape, two counts of sexual assault, and one count of outraging public decency, all on August 2 at the same court.
The series of events began in the early hours of Sunday, February 23, 2020.
At approximately 4:45 a.m., two women exited the Piccadilly Line at Bounds Green Underground station.
As they moved away from the station, they observed a man standing outside a residence with his trousers around his ankles, engaged in the act of masturbating while peering through a window.
The women, understandably frightened by the situation, quickly ran away from the scene.
Johnston, displaying aggressive behavior, then began shouting and pursued them down the street toward their home.
Despite their efforts to seek safety, the women managed to reach their residence and hide under a stairwell.
Johnston, however, continued to harass them by banging on their door and inserting his hand through the letterbox before eventually leaving the area.
The distressing incident was reported to the police, but no immediate arrests were made at that time.
The disturbing pattern of Johnston’s predatory behavior continued three years later.
On a different occasion, he boarded a Piccadilly Line train at Heathrow Terminal Five.
Walking confidently through the carriage, he approached a young woman who was asleep.
Johnston then sexually assaulted her and proceeded to rape her while she was unconscious.
This brutal attack was witnessed by a tourist and his young son, who later reported what they had seen to the authorities.
Despite the gravity of the incident, it was not captured on CCTV footage, and police efforts to identify the victim or gather additional reports proved challenging.
It was only after a review of historic rape cases by the BTP in December 2022 that Johnston was identified as a suspect.
He was subsequently arrested at HMP Brixton, where he was serving time for burglary.
Further investigations led to the identification of the victim, a 20-year-old woman at the time of the assault, who was unaware of the full extent of what had happened to her until police made contact.
The victim’s bravery and cooperation were instrumental in securing Johnston’s conviction.
Detective Constable Kathrine Spencer, who led the investigation, emphasized the dangerous nature of Johnston’s actions, stating, “The offences committed by Ryan Johnston show him to be a dangerous individual who viewed women with contempt.
He was simply concerned with his own sexual gratification at any cost.
I hope this sends out a strong message to survivors of these offences that we will do all we can to bring offenders to justice to make society a safer place.” Senior Investigating Officer Detective Inspector Paul Attwell of the BTP’s Major, Serious and Organised Crime Unit also commented on the case, highlighting Johnston’s brazen attitude and lack of remorse.
“Johnston’s brazen attack in front of witnesses highlights his lack of shame or remorse for his actions, something which continued throughout his trial.
I am thankful his violence and despicable actions have been recognised by the guilty verdicts and significant sentence.
His depraved actions will have a life-long impact on the victim and those who witnessed this.
I am thankful for their bravery throughout this investigation.
I hope they can now find some comfort in the fact that justice has been served.”
