WARRINGTON MAN HEADBUTTED THEN-PARTNER IN BURY DURING ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP
Ryan Holmes, aged 21, was involved in abusive and violent behavior towards his ex-partner in Bury town centre, during a relationship in which he repeatedly attacked her.The court heard that Holmes was regularly violent between July 2021 and November 2022 when he was 18 and 19 years old, and she was a few years younger.
Throughout this period, he threatened violence, attended her home uninvited, was verbally abusive, and made excessive phone calls.
The victim, who was 16 when they met and suffered a brain injury at age seven, described Holmes as emotionally abusive initially, but his behavior turned physical.
Holmes ordered her to give him money for cannabis, and when she forgot, he would react angrily.
He once headbutted her in Bury town centre, and on another occasion, he responded aggressively when she said she was going on holiday.
He threatened to slash her tires and accused her of being unfaithful.
During an argument, Holmes pushed her to the floor and stood on her face while wearing trainers, causing bruising.
After their breakup on June 16, 2022, he repeatedly called her, broke into her flat, and assaulted her again, smashing her head against a banister and throwing her to the floor.
Neighbors alerted police, and Holmes was arrested.
The court sentenced Holmes to a two-year suspended sentence for coercive and controlling behavior, with requirements to attend 20 rehabilitation days and complete 200 hours of unpaid work.
The judge described his conduct as 'utterly unconscionable' and emphasized that he treated his partner as 'chattel', noting that Holmes was immature at the time, had no prior convictions, and has since matured, obtained employment, and is expecting a child.
