Pool Domestic Abuser
A 36-year-old man named Ryan Edwards, of Eastpool Park in Pool, has been sentenced following a violent assault on his former partner over tobacco. The court heard that Edwards left his partner in severe pain and unable to work as a result of the attack. On March 8, after a night of drinking and drug use at a local pub, the couple returned to Edwards' residence. There, he began shouting at his partner, backing her into a sofa, and demanding she hand over her purchased tobacco. He then forcibly tore her dressing gown, climbed on top of her, and sat on her with his full body weight. Additionally, Edwards placed his legs over her mouth to hinder her breathing and delivered multiple punches, causing her intense pain and fear for her life. The victim attempted to give him the tobacco, throwing it at him, but Edwards continued his assault with further blows around her eye, leading to bleeding. Eventually, Edwards started crying, which allowed her to escape to a nearby caravan where police were called and he was arrested. During police questioning, Edwards admitted to having 'f**ked up' and 'lost his temper,' but he subsequently chose to remain silent. The victim was taken to hospital with a swollen black eye and fractures to her face, including injuries to her eye socket and jaw. She reported that her injuries could take up to six months to fully heal, has been reliant on strong painkillers, and has lost trust in men. She has been unable to work since the attack. Edwards, who was previously on a community order for assaulting another former partner, was sentenced to 20 months in prison, with a reduction to serve 40% of that term. The judge described the assault as prolonged and relentless, emphasizing that Edwards sat on his victim and repeatedly punched her in the face, causing very painful injuries. The sentencing took place at Truro Crown Court.
