RYAN BELLERBY SCARBOROUGH PAEDOPHILE SENTENCED FOR NEARLY 35,000 CHILD SEX-ABUSE IMAGES

In January 2021, a disturbing case emerged involving Ryan Bellerby, a 26-year-old resident of Scarborough, who was found to possess an alarming collection of nearly 35,000 indecent images of children.

The severity of his online activities and the nature of the material he downloaded prompted a serious legal response, culminating in a 22-month prison sentence handed down by York Crown Court.

Prosecutor Dan Cordey detailed that between December 2019 and February 2020, Bellerby engaged in extensive online activity, downloading a total of 34,927 indecent images of minors.

Of these, more than 5,200 were classified as Class A, indicating the most severe category involving explicit material depicting the sexual abuse of children.

The images included both photographs and videos, featuring boys and girls aged between six and twelve years old, highlighting the disturbing nature of his collection.

The police investigation was initiated when Bellerby was arrested on February 20 of the previous year.

During the raid on his Scarborough flat, authorities seized a laptop, two mobile phones, and a hard drive.

When officers requested the PIN and lock code for one of the mobile devices, Bellerby refused to cooperate, refusing to disclose the necessary information.

This refusal complicated the investigation, leading to a prolonged and costly effort to access the device's contents.

Despite being remanded in custody following his arrest, Bellerby’s refusal to cooperate with authorities persisted.

Further complicating the case, Bellerby was served with a formal notice in May of the previous year, demanding that he disclose the passcode for his Sony mobile phone.

However, he continued to withhold this information, which hindered the police’s ability to examine the device thoroughly.

Bellerby’s legal troubles extended beyond possession of illicit images; he faced additional charges, including allegations of attempting to induce a 12-year-old boy into sexual activity and attempting to communicate with a 13-year-old boy for sexual gratification.

He pleaded guilty to the possession and distribution charges but denied the other two allegations, which resulted in not-guilty verdicts on those counts.

During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Bellerby, who suffers from Asperger’s syndrome, had been initially arrested in October of the previous year on suspicion of previous illegal online activity.

He was released on bail with strict conditions, including a prohibition on unsupervised contact with children and a ban on possessing devices capable of internet access.

Despite these restrictions, police discovered a Samsung mobile phone hidden behind a curtain during a search of his flat in February 2020.

The investigation uncovered that Bellerby had visited a Russian website multiple times, from which he downloaded hundreds of illicit images involving children aged six to twelve.

He used various aliases on Skype to distribute some of the images and employed encrypted cloud storage under false names to conceal the material.

Legal representatives for Bellerby, including Daniel Prowse, argued that his client had led a largely isolated life, spending most of his adult years as a “hermit” immersed in online gaming.

Prowse emphasized that Bellerby’s social interactions were primarily online, often with younger individuals who shared his gaming interests.

He described this lifestyle as unhealthy and damaging, suggesting that Bellerby’s online habits contributed to his problematic behavior.

Judge Sean Morris addressed the court, acknowledging that Bellerby’s lifestyle was bizarre and isolated but emphasizing that his online conduct was egregious enough to warrant immediate imprisonment.

The judge stated that although Bellerby had his own personal issues, including Asperger’s syndrome, he was fully aware of right and wrong.

The judge condemned Bellerby for his persistence and sophistication in maintaining his illegal activities, even after police involvement.

He criticized Bellerby for showing “complete contempt for law and order” by refusing to provide the pass code, which resulted in a costly and time-consuming effort to unlock his device.

Ultimately, Bellerby was sentenced to 22 months in prison, a sentence that would be reduced due to his time already served since his arrest.

The judge also imposed a 10-year sexual-harm prevention order, restricting his internet use and monitoring his future activities to prevent further offenses.

The court’s decision underscores the seriousness with which such crimes are treated and highlights the ongoing efforts to combat online child exploitation, especially involving individuals living in communities like Scarborough.
