In a case that has shocked the Hartlepool community, 67-year-old pensioner Russell Chapman was found to possess a significant collection of indecent images of children, leading to a criminal investigation that uncovered disturbing material stored on multiple devices.The incident came to light in June 2015 when Chapman visited an O2 store in Hartlepool to upgrade his mobile phone.
During the process of transferring data from his old device to the new one, staff members at the shop noticed suspicious content, specifically indecent images, on his phone.
Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, the staff promptly contacted law enforcement authorities to investigate further.
Following this initial discovery, police executed a search warrant at Chapman's residence in Hartlepool.
During the search, officers found additional material on another mobile phone and on a disc, bringing the total number of images to 390.
Of these, 108 were classified as the most serious category, indicating the most severe level of indecency and harm.
The evidence was substantial and deeply troubling, highlighting the extent of Chapman's possession of illegal material.
In court, Russell Chapman admitted to both creating and possessing indecent images of children, a serious criminal offense.
His plea of guilty was accepted, and he faced sentencing for his actions.
