RUSSELL BARNES FROM FERNDALE JAILED OVER CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IMAGES IN MOUNTAIN ASH AND PENRHYS
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local communities, Russell Barnes, a man originally from Ferndale and now residing in Penrhys, has been sentenced to prison after authorities uncovered an extensive collection of child sexual abuse images and videos.The investigation revealed that Barnes, aged 37, had been involved in the possession and creation of highly disturbing material, including photographs and movies depicting children as young as one year old.
According to court records, nearly four hours of footage were recorded by Barnes himself using a camcorder.
These recordings included footage of children playing in a paddling pool and children in the street, aged between one and 14 years old.
Barnes admitted to filming these children, claiming he enjoyed the thrill of taking such footage, despite having taped over much of the original recordings.
The police found that Barnes had also copied images from his computer to his mobile phone, further indicating his intent to possess and possibly distribute this material.
The court heard that Barnes was involved in running a children’s drama group near Mountain Ash, a detail that added to the gravity of his offenses.
Although he denied keeping the images for sexual gratification, the evidence presented was overwhelming.
Prosecutor Andrew Davies outlined that Barnes possessed a total of 4,557 indecent images of children, spanning various levels of severity, including five images that involved bestiality, totaling 60 images, along with 19 movies ranging from level one to four.
Additionally, there were 2,965 extreme pornographic images and 46 movies depicting acts of bestiality.
When police officers executed a search warrant at Barnes’ then residence in Treorchy, Rhondda, on January 11, they found the extensive collection of illicit material stored across multiple devices, including computers, memory cards, and his mobile phone.
Barnes admitted to storing these images and videos, acknowledging his prolonged engagement with such material over the past year and a half.
During the court proceedings, Barnes’s defense argued that a psychiatrist had diagnosed him with paedophilia, which added context to his actions.
However, the judge, John Curran, described the case as particularly grave, emphasizing the large volume of disturbing and filthy material involved.
Barnes was sentenced to five years in prison, with a custodial term of four years.
He is expected to be released after serving two years, followed by a three-year period on license.
Furthermore, the judge imposed a sexual offences prevention order, restricting Barnes’s access to the internet, contact with children under 17, and his presence in children’s play areas and leisure facilities, including cinemas.
He was also disqualified from working with children and mandated to register as a sex offender for life.
The case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat the distribution and possession of child abuse images and protect vulnerable minors from exploitation.
