ROY MCKECHNIE SENTENCED IN LONDON FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF CHILDREN IN THE 1990S AND 2000S
In a significant case that has shocked the London community, Roy McKechnie, a 53-year-old man residing on Goldsmith Road in the SE15 area, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term following his conviction for multiple serious sexual offenses committed against minors. The proceedings took place at Croydon Crown Court on Friday, 29 March, where McKechnie received a total sentence of 19 years behind bars for his heinous crimes.
His conviction was the culmination of a detailed investigation that uncovered a disturbing pattern of abuse spanning over a decade.
On 21 February, McKechnie was found guilty of three counts of rape, eight counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child, and one count of indecent assault.
These offenses involved two young girls who were under the age of 16 at the time of the incidents, highlighting the gravity and predatory nature of his actions.
The case came to light after a woman, now in her 30s, stepped forward in October 2016 to report abuse she endured in January 1992, when she was only in her early teens.
She recounted to authorities that McKechnie, a man known to her, had sexually assaulted her at a residence in Sydenham.
Her testimony was the first piece of the puzzle that led investigators to uncover a broader pattern of abuse.
Further investigations revealed that in December 2016, another woman, then in her early teens and now in her 20s, also came forward.
She alleged that McKechnie, who was known to her family, had raped and sexually assaulted her multiple times between 2003 and 2004.
These revelations painted a disturbing picture of repeated offenses over many years, involving a man who was trusted by the victims' families.
Following these disclosures, McKechnie was arrested and brought in for questioning.
During the initial stages of the investigation, he attempted to deny the allegations, claiming he was in prison at the time of the incident in Sydenham.
However, authorities verified that he had been granted leave from prison during that weekend, contradicting his claims.
Despite his continued denial, the evidence against him was substantial enough to charge him with multiple serious offenses.
The court's verdict underscores the severity of McKechnie’s crimes and the impact on his victims.
His sentencing reflects the justice system’s response to such grave violations, emphasizing the importance of protecting vulnerable minors and holding offenders accountable for their actions in London.
