ROSS RUTHERFORD FROM ROXBURGH AND FIFE INDICTED FOR CHILD ABUSE FILES DISCOVERED BY POLICE
Ross Rutherford, a 21-year-old kitchen porter from Strathmiglo, located in the region of Fife, has been formally placed on the Sex Offenders Register following a police investigation that uncovered a disturbing collection of child abuse files stored on his devices. The case came to light during a visit to his residence, where law enforcement officials executed a warrant and discovered a significant cache of illicit material.
On May 31 of the previous year, police officers arrived at Rutherford’s home with the warrant, prompting a tense confrontation.
During the encounter, Rutherford reportedly asked the officers, “Would it speed things up if I tell you there was stuff on my phone?” This statement indicated a level of awareness and possible remorse about the contents of his devices.
Subsequent searches revealed a horrifying collection of digital files.
Authorities uncovered a total of 272 videos that depicted child abuse, with more than half of these videos classified as the most severe and disturbing category.
In addition to the videos, investigators found 12 images that were accessible for viewing, alongside 25 other images that were inaccessible at the time of the search.
The sheer volume and nature of these files underscored the gravity of the offense.
During the legal proceedings at Dundee Sheriff Court, Rutherford admitted to possessing these illicit files.
His solicitor, Carolyn Leckie, addressed the court, emphasizing Rutherford’s vulnerability and ongoing medical assessment.
She stated, “There’s clearly a vulnerability there.
He’s awaiting a diagnosis from the NHS of potential autism.” Leckie further described Rutherford as being very open, honest, and cooperative throughout the investigation, taking full responsibility for his actions.
She also noted that Rutherford had voluntarily sought help from the sex offender support service, Stop It Now, and expressed that he was very remorseful for his conduct.
In light of the evidence and Rutherford’s circumstances, Sheriff Alastair Carmichael ordered that reports be prepared ahead of the sentencing hearing scheduled for September 25.
The case highlights the ongoing concerns surrounding individuals with vulnerabilities who commit such heinous acts, and the legal process continues to unfold as authorities seek justice and appropriate measures for rehabilitation and public safety.
