GREENOCK DOMESTIC ABUSER JAILED FOR MORE THAN TWO YEARS
Brute Ross Beckett’s horrific conduct towards the woman – terrifying her and alarming her relatives – saw him jailed for more than two years at the town’s sheriff court.The 45-year-old subjected the woman – who is no longer his partner – to an abusive course of behaviour between April 2019 and November 2023.
The charge, which Beckett admitted earlier this year, stated that on one occasion the woman attempted to escape his shocking abuse by climbing out of the window of a flat three floors up.
Beckett also bombarded the woman with text messages, emails and telephone calls, and refused to stop despite pleas from the woman and members of her family.
He also entered the woman’s home uninvited.
Sheriff Anthony McGeehan said Beckett’s behaviour was alarming to not only the woman, but also her relatives.
Beckett previously pleaded guilty to the domestic abuse charge at Greenock Sheriff Court, but his sentencing was deferred for the preparation of a background report.
At the latest calling of the case, defence advocate Paul Keenan acknowledged Beckett’s previous convictions for offences of a domestic nature and the 'relentless' abuse the woman endured.
He also refuted a suggestion contained in the report, prepared by social workers, that his client had attempted to ‘victim blame’.
Mr Keenan said: “There is no victim blaming here.
There is full acceptance of responsibility.
He is utterly contrite.” Sheriff McGeehan condemned Beckett’s abusive behaviour towards the woman over a prolonged period.
He told Beckett: “I’m satisfied that a custodial sentence is the only appropriate method of dealing with this offence.” Beckett, of Clynder Road, was jailed for 27 months for the indictment offence – a sentence which was reduced from one of 30 months to account for his plea of guilty.
A non-harassment order was also imposed which will bar Beckett from approaching, contacting or communicating with his victim, or attempting to do so, for the next 10 years.
