HAWICK MAN JAILED FOR 15 YEARS FOR SAVAGE DOMESTIC MURDER
A violent rapist and domestic abuser named Rory O’Connor, aged 54, was convicted of murdering his fiancée, Diane Nichol, 57, after manipulating her into believing he was harmless.Despite warnings from police and her sister Gail Atkinson, Diane refused to leave O’Connor or reveal the extent of his abuse.
O’Connor subjected Diane to a prolonged and savage beating at their home, causing injuries including a severed liver, and leaving her with 'car crash' injuries.
Last year, he murdered her after an incident where witnesses heard shouting and whimpering.
When police arrived, Diane was found lying face down on the floor with blood stains and a large clump of her hair.
Despite efforts by paramedics, she died later that evening.
O’Connor had prior convictions for rape in Ireland in 2002 but moved to Hawick in 2018, where he met Diane.
Her sister Gail had raised concerns and warned police of the danger he posed, but Diane’s trust in him persisted, leading to her tragic death.
O’Connor was jailed for 15 years, and the judge emphasized that his savage violence needed to be deterred.
Police Scotland manages registered sex offenders and provides support to victims, but Diane’s case was a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers domestic abuse can hold, especially when warnings are ignored.
