YORK MAN RONALD SMITH SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF YOUNG GIRL

In October 2015, a disturbing case unfolded in York involving Ronald Smith, a man with a military background, who was ultimately sentenced to four years in prison for the sexual abuse of a young girl.

The victim, whose age ranged between ten and thirteen during the period of the abuse, bravely testified in York Crown Court about the traumatic experiences she endured at the hands of Smith, who is now 81 years old.

According to her account, Smith, a former serviceman, used threats of self-harm to silence her and prevent her from revealing the abuse.

She recounted that he told her he would kill himself if she confided in anyone about what was happening.

For years, she kept her silence, feeling trapped and afraid.

It was only when she reached adulthood and heard others referring to Smith as a “respectable” figure that she felt compelled to come forward and report the crimes to the police.

The victim expressed her anger and frustration, stating, “It made me angry because he wasn’t respectable.” Her decision to speak out marked a significant turning point in her life, shedding light on the hidden abuse she suffered.

During the trial, a jury found Smith guilty of two specific charges: causing a child to engage in sexual activity by getting her to cane his bottom.

These convictions were reached after nine hours of deliberation.

However, the jury was unable to reach verdicts on an additional twelve charges, which involved allegations of indecent assault, indecency with a child, and other sexual offenses.

The prosecution chose not to pursue a retrial on these remaining charges, and formal not guilty verdicts were entered.

Smith, who resides at Hazel Garth, off Stockton Lane in York, denied four counts of indecent assault, two counts of indecency with a child, and eight counts of causing a child to engage in sexual activity.

Despite his denials, the court handed down a four-year prison sentence at Leeds Crown Court.

Furthermore, Judge Tom Bayliss imposed a sexual harm prevention order that will remain in effect indefinitely.

Smith will also be registered as a sex offender for the rest of his life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions.

The court heard that Smith’s relationship with the victim’s family was known to both parties, with visits from Smith to the family’s home occurring from time to time.

The victim revealed that she confided in a school friend and her mother about the abuse when she was thirteen, after which she refused to visit Smith’s residence.

Several years later, she confronted him at his house in the presence of others.

During this confrontation, Smith reportedly admitted, “I will admit things were done that shouldn’t have been done.” In his testimony, Smith claimed he was frightened that the victim might become violent or destructive when she accused him at his home.

He stated, “I shouted ‘OK I have done it’.

I just wanted them out,” indicating a sense of panic.

Smith maintained that he did not behave improperly towards her and expressed shock at the allegations, asserting, “I was shocked about the allegations.

I couldn’t believe it.

I am not that type of person.

I am too shy.” Regarding the caning incident, Smith admitted that the victim had struck him but denied deriving any sexual pleasure from it.

He claimed that the victim, not he, had suggested the act of caning.

Conversely, the victim testified that Smith was the instigator of the abuse and described how he had subjected her to various forms of mistreatment from the age of four.

She explained, “He used to ask me how I was enjoying it.

I was too young to know, to understand why I would, why I would enjoy it.” Smith also alleged that the sexual abuse allegations were fabricated in 2013, purportedly to obtain compensation for expensive dental work she had recently undergone.

The court, however, found the evidence against him compelling, leading to his conviction and subsequent sentencing, which aims to protect the community and prevent further harm.
