ROGER BENSON FROM SHIPLEY SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF TEENAGER NEAR LEEDS

A former lecturer from Leeds Polytechnic, Roger Benson, has been sentenced to five years in prison after admitting to sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl nearly three decades ago. The incident took place in 1986, and Benson, aged 77 and residing on Salts Mill Road, Shipley, pleaded guilty to five counts of indecent assault against the young girl.

During the court proceedings, the victim, who is now a married woman with children, delivered a heartfelt victim impact statement. She described the emotional scars left by the abuse, expressing feelings of dirtiness, shame, and a profound sense of worthlessness that have persisted over the years. Her testimony highlighted the long-lasting effects of Benson’s actions on her mental health and well-being.

The judge overseeing the case condemned Benson’s conduct, emphasizing the gravity of his offenses despite his previous good reputation. It was noted that Benson had been involved in work with the Prince’s Trust, which added a layer of disappointment given his role in supporting youth development. The court also ordered Benson to be registered on the sex offenders register for life and imposed a sexual harm prevention order to restrict his future activities and interactions.

It was revealed that Benson’s criminal history included prior convictions for similar offenses, although these did not relate to his professional work at the time of the recent abuse. The sentencing reflects the seriousness with which the justice system treats sexual offenses, especially those committed against minors, regardless of the offender’s background or reputation.
