ROBIN JACOBS AND SHOCKING RAPE IN LONDON

A prominent barrister named Robin Jacobs has been convicted of sexually assaulting his Tinder date in London, an incident that has garnered significant media attention and legal scrutiny.

The 39-year-old lawyer was sentenced to four years in prison following the brutal assault that lasted for roughly 20 to 30 seconds, during which he forcibly engaged in a sex act despite the victim's repeated protests and screams for him to stop.

The events transpired in the summer of 2017 at Jacobs’ flat in London after the pair had previously met on two occasions.

Their initial interaction involved a lunch date in September, which was described as consensual, culminating in both of them returning to Jacobs’ residence where they shared intimate relations.

However, the situation took an alarming turn when Jacobs unexpectedly forced her to perform a sex act without her consent, disregarding her pleas and commands to stop.

According to court reports, after the assault, Jacobs played misleadingly friendly, inviting the woman to “come for a cuddle,” and even offered her paracetamol.

The woman, who is in her 30s, described her experience to police, recounting how she told Jacobs twice to cease his actions, but he persisted until she finally screamed for him to leave.

She described feeling overwhelmed and in significant pain, lying face down on the bed while Jacobs sat nearby and made bizarre comments about laughter, saying, “It’s not funny, I shouldn’t laugh,” after which he chuckled to himself.

Jacobs, who from Woodford in East London, has been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), which he claims affects his ability to interpret social cues, maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings.

He insisted he did not intend to rape the woman and claimed that if she had explicitly asked him to stop, he would have done so immediately.

Despite these assertions, the court found the evidence against him compelling.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge John Hillen emphasized the gravity of the case, expressing that it was deeply regrettable to sentence a man of Jacobs’ professional standing and good character to imprisonment.

Nonetheless, he stated, “It gives the court no pleasure to sentence anyone to terms of imprisonment” and acknowledged that Jacobs’ uncontrollable laughter at the scene was not deliberate but likely a reaction to his ASD, though based on an unreasonable belief that the woman consented.

The judge further explained that Jacobs believed, falsely, that his victim was consenting, which was an “unreasonable” misconception given the circumstances.

Details of the day reveal that after a casual pizza meal, Jacobs and the woman returned to his residence.

At one point, Jacobs directed the woman to wait alone at his flat before trying to initiate a sexual act without her consent, which she resisted by screaming and protesting.

Despite her clear objections, he continued for a brief period before stopping when she shouted at him.

During her police interview, the woman detailed her suffering, including how she experienced sharp pain, felt helpless, and was in emotional turmoil afterward.

She reported feeling humiliated and stated that she struggled with trust in others following the incident, which led to her seeking counseling and medication, and causing her to be off work for approximately two months.

Prosecutor Jollyon Robertson highlighted the significant impact on the victim, reading her impact statement to the court.

He described how she felt “a degree of humiliation” when Jacobs laughed shortly after the assault, and how her life has been negatively affected, with her trust in others damaged and her behavioral health impacted.

In defense, Stephen Rose argued that Jacobs’ laughter was a manifestation of his ASD, not an indication of malicious intent or an attempt to humiliate.

He characterized the incident as a “momentary mistake” and stressed Jacobs’ struggle to comprehend social and sexual boundaries, given his disability.

Rose also emphasized that Jacobs was unlikely to offend again and that he remained remorseful.

Following the assault, Jacobs contacted a friend via text, downplaying the woman’s reaction as “a bit of an overreaction” and questioning whether the police would come for him, displaying a dismissive attitude towards the seriousness of his actions.

He claimed confusion about the incident, stating he was trying to navigate social interactions in a manner he considered typical of his “laddish” behavior.

Throughout the trial, Jacobs repeatedly asserted that he did not rape the woman, insisting she suddenly shouted at him to leave, and denied making inappropriate jokes during their initial sexual encounter.

His defense argued that, although consent to one act does not automatically imply consent to others, there was a misunderstanding in this case, and he believed he had his victim’s consent based on her behavior at the time.

The court also heard how Jacobs made disturbing remarks during previous sexual encounters, and he admitted to a misunderstanding of consent, but maintained that his actions were not malicious.

His own testimony reflected a belief that he thought she was “absolutely fine,” and he emphasized that he would have stopped instantly had she explicitly instructed him to do so.

Legal experts indicate that this conviction is likely to end Jacobs’ legal career, as his criminal record and registration as a sex offender will severely limit future professional opportunities.

The judge ordered that Jacobs serve his full four-year sentence, after which he must register as a sex offender for life, marking a stark end to his career as a practicing barrister in educational law, a profession he had continued in despite the legal proceedings.
