Canonbury Rapist
In October 2017, a disturbing case emerged involving Robert Wootton, a resident of Tilney Gardens in Canonbury, who was convicted of heinous crimes against a young girl. The case drew significant attention due to the severity of the offenses and the ongoing concerns about potential additional victims.

Wootton, who was only a teenager at the time he committed these appalling acts, began his criminal behavior early, targeting a young girl and subjecting her to sexual abuse. The trauma inflicted on the victim was compounded by Wootton’s subsequent actions, which included downloading child sexual abuse images while he was on bail, indicating a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior.

He was brought before Wood Green Crown Court in August, where he faced multiple charges. The court found him guilty of attempted rape and sexual assault of a child under the age of 13, as well as engaging a minor in sexual activity. In addition to these convictions, Wootton admitted to making indecent or pseudo photographs of a child in February, while he was awaiting trial, further illustrating his ongoing engagement in illegal and morally reprehensible conduct.

Typically, police authorities release mugshots of offenders who receive lengthy sentences, especially in cases involving sexual offenses. However, in Wootton’s case, authorities have decided against releasing his image. This decision was based on a comprehensive risk assessment, which considers the potential danger to the public and the possibility of other victims. Despite this, the victim’s family has publicly expressed their desire for Wootton’s mugshot to be made available, citing concerns that he may have preyed on others beyond their own daughter.

The victim’s father shared with the Gazette how their lives were irrevocably changed when their daughter confided in them about her abuse. He described her emotional struggles, noting that she was having difficulty in school and was often tearful. He recounted how his wife picked her up from school one day, and during the car ride, the girl revealed the abuse she had suffered. This revelation shattered their family’s sense of security and trust.

He further explained that their daughter’s trust issues and emotional distress became apparent just as she was preparing for her exams, highlighting the profound impact of the trauma. The father was present in court to witness Wootton’s conviction and sentencing, and he expressed a sense of relief that justice was finally served. He emphasized that the primary goal was for Wootton to be held accountable, so that the community could recognize the danger he posed and reassure the victim that her courage in coming forward was justified.

Regarding the possibility of other victims, the father expressed concern that the case might not be isolated. He urged other parents to have open conversations with their children and to remain vigilant. He also hoped that others in similar situations would find the strength to speak out, helping to prevent further harm.

It is noteworthy that Wootton faced additional charges, including a rape and two sexual assaults, which remain on file. There were also two charges related to making indecent images of a child, which Wootton denied. Despite the convictions, some charges were left unresolved, leaving an ongoing concern for authorities and the community alike.
