Southport Child Sexual Abuser
In a case that has shocked the local community of Southport, Merseyside, Robert Wilby has been sentenced to nearly five years in prison for a series of heinous crimes committed against a young girl nearly three decades ago. The offences took place during the late 1970s, beginning in 1977, when the victim was only 10 years old, and continued over a span of three years during her paper round duties.

Wilby, now aged 61 and residing on Norwood Road in Southport, was convicted of five counts of child indecency and two counts of indecent assault. The court heard that Wilby, a former fairground worker, had a disturbing pattern of predatory behaviour, often hanging around the shop where the young girl worked. His actions escalated over time, as he repeatedly approached her near her workplace, eventually convincing her to visit his bedsit, where he committed the indecent assaults.

The case came to light after the victim confided in a counsellor about the abuse she endured. This crucial information led to Wilby’s arrest and subsequent trial at Liverpool Crown Court. The court was told that Wilby’s manipulative tactics and predatory conduct had left lasting scars on his victim, both physically and emotionally.

Judge Sean Duncan, presiding over the case, described Wilby’s behaviour as manipulative and predatory, emphasizing the lifelong impact on the victim. In his sentencing remarks, the judge highlighted the severity of the crimes and the betrayal of trust involved. Wilby was sentenced to four years and nine months in prison and was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for life. Additionally, he received an indefinite ban from working with children, reflecting the court’s concern for public safety and the protection of vulnerable minors.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and safeguarding measures to prevent such abuses from occurring, especially in communities like Southport where trust and safety are paramount.
