Torrington Sexual Abuser
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Torrington, Robert North, a 45-year-old accountant and treasurer of the local rugby club, was convicted of sexually assaulting a woman after offering her a lift home from a social gathering. The incident, which took place in February 2022, has brought to light serious concerns about personal safety and the importance of victim support.

According to court records, North had offered the woman a ride after a party, and she accepted, falling asleep during the journey. The assault occurred while she was unconscious in the back seat of North's vehicle. She awoke to find him with his hands inside her clothing, specifically up her dress and inside her underwear. The victim's distress and the details of the assault were confirmed during the trial, which took place at Exeter Crown Court in November.

North, who resides on Linden Close, denied any wrongdoing, claiming that his actions were solely aimed at helping the woman, who he alleged was unresponsive at the time. However, the jury found him guilty of assault by penetration, a serious criminal offense. The court proceedings revealed the gravity of the incident and the breach of trust involved.

On January 21, North was sentenced to four and a half years in prison. Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for life, reflecting the severity of his crime. Judge Anna Richardson, presiding over the case, condemned North's actions, stating, “You took the opportunity to callously seek sexual gratification as she was lying on the back seat of the car.”

Following the sentencing, police officers expressed their admiration for the victim’s bravery in coming forward and enduring a lengthy legal process. The case, which dates back to 2020, underscores the importance of supporting victims of sexual assault and ensuring that justice is served. The community of Torrington and beyond are reminded of the ongoing need to address issues of consent and personal safety in all aspects of daily life.
