ROBERT MILLS SENTENCED TO OVER EIGHT YEARS FOR RAPE IN KENT'S GREATSTONE AND ROMNEY AREA
In a case that has shocked the local community, Robert Mills, a man from Kent, has been handed a lengthy prison sentence after being convicted of raping a woman he met at a pub.The incident took place in the seaside town of New Romney during August 2019, and the subsequent legal proceedings have brought significant attention to issues of personal safety and criminal justice in the region.
According to court records, Mills encountered his victim one evening in New Romney.
After their initial meeting, the woman agreed to walk with Mills back to his residence.
Instead of following through on this seemingly innocent gesture, Mills led her through nearby woods towards his home in Hardy Road, Greatstone.
Once inside his property, Mills locked the door behind them and committed the assault.
The woman, who was visibly terrified, was threatened by Mills when he revealed he was carrying a knife, which added to her fear and distress during the attack.
Following the assault, the woman managed to escape from Mills' house during the early hours of the morning and ran to safety.
She immediately reported the incident to Kent Police, who responded swiftly.
Mills was arrested on the same day, and despite his denial of the allegations, the evidence presented at trial proved his guilt beyond reasonable doubt.
The case was heard at Canterbury Crown Court, where Mills, aged 28, was convicted on two counts of rape on 25 August 2023.
The severity of his crimes and the impact on the victim prompted the court to impose a substantial sentence.
On Friday, 8 December 2023, Mills was sentenced to a total of eight and a half years in prison.
Additionally, he will serve a further five and a half years on licence under an extended sentence, ensuring close supervision upon his release and aiming to prevent any further harm.
This case underscores the importance of swift police action and the justice system's commitment to holding offenders accountable, especially in cases involving violence and threats to personal safety in the Kent area, including Greatstone and New Romney.
