ROBERT MCNAUGHTON FROM GLASGOW CAUGHT TRYING TO MEET TEEN BOY IN NORTH WALES
In January 2019, a disturbing case unfolded involving Robert McNaughton, a known sex offender from Glasgow, who traveled from Scotland to North Wales with the intent of meeting a 14-year-old boy.The incident was brought to light when an undercover police officer, posing as a teenage boy, engaged in online conversations with McNaughton, leading to his eventual arrest.
According to court proceedings, McNaughton initiated contact through an online chat room, where he believed he was communicating with a minor.
During these exchanges, he expressed a desire to meet the young person in person.
The police had set up the sting operation, and when McNaughton arrived at Rhyl after traveling by train from Glasgow, authorities apprehended him immediately upon his arrival.
Further investigations revealed that McNaughton was not only attempting to meet the 14-year-old but had also engaged in sexual conversations with other individuals online.
In one instance, he asked a chat room participant if they had a camera so they could masturbate together.
Additionally, he tried to arrange a meeting with another individual, who claimed to be only 13 years old, with plans to meet in London.
During the court hearing at Mold Crown Court, Judge Niclas Parry condemned McNaughton’s actions, highlighting his disturbing history.
The judge pointed out that McNaughton had previously served time in 2003 for sexually abusing a boy in a public space.
The judge emphasized that McNaughton’s recent behavior demonstrated a continued pattern of attempting to engage young boys in sexual activities, describing him as devious and manipulative.
The court was told that McNaughton had made efforts to meet three different young boys.
As part of his sentencing, McNaughton was sentenced to 26 months in prison.
Furthermore, he was placed under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for a period of ten years, restricting his activities and contact with minors to prevent further offenses.
Prosecutor Andrew Green recounted that during the online chat, McNaughton responded to a question about whether it was acceptable for him to be a 14-year-old boy by asking, “Are you okay with me being 22?” He claimed to be a student living in Glasgow and falsely stated that his mother was calling him for dinner, attempting to maintain the deception.
The prosecutor detailed how McNaughton shifted the conversation towards sexual topics, expressing a desire to masturbate the supposed minor and using various grooming tactics to encourage illicit activity.
Police also discovered three child sex movies on McNaughton’s phone, one of which was classified as Category A, indicating a high level of seriousness.
The 43-year-old, residing at Napier Place in Glasgow, pleaded guilty to nine charges related to child sex offenses.
These included three counts of attempting to incite a child to engage in non-penetrative sexual activity, attempting to communicate sexually with a child, and attempting to facilitate a child sex offense.
He also admitted to making indecent images of a child on three occasions and attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming.
It was also revealed that McNaughton had previously been deported from New Zealand after serving time for an indecent assault in 2003, underscoring a troubling pattern of offending behavior across different countries.
