ROBERT MCGOVERN'S HORRIFIC CRIMES IN EDINBURGH: A CHILD'S NIGHTMARE UNVEILED
A man named Robert McGovern, also known as Robert McKenzie, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after a series of heinous crimes committed against young girls in Edinburgh. The former children’s soft play worker was found guilty of a disturbing pattern of sexual abuse spanning over four years, beginning when he was just 15 years old.
McGovern’s criminal activities involved the assault and rape of six young girls, with the offenses taking place at various locations across Edinburgh, including woods near a golf course and secluded outdoor areas.
The severity and brutality of his actions have shocked the community and prompted a serious legal response.
At the High Court in Glasgow, McGovern, now 19, was sentenced on Monday after pleading guilty to ten charges, including multiple counts of rape.
The court heard that his crimes occurred between October 2019 and March 2023, during which he exploited his victims in different ways, often using violence, intimidation, and blackmail to control them.
One of the victims, a girl who later bravely reported her ordeal to the police, recounted how McGovern initially engaged in a “playfight” that turned violent, including choking her.
She also described how he once stood at her front door with a knife after she asked to leave, and later raped her in the woods during the summer of 2020.
Another girl was targeted after they connected via FaceTime.
McGovern demanded she participate in video calls, even while she was sleeping.
He repeatedly raped her, including after they took selfies together in his bedroom.
During one of these assaults, he reportedly told her, “Come on, it is just fun.” The third victim endured physical violence and was called degrading names.
Prosecutor Kath Harper explained that McGovern persistently pressured her for sex, coerced her into sending intimate photos, and blackmailed her by threatening to share those images with others if she refused his demands.
The fourth girl, only 12 years old at the time, was raped in the woods near a golf course.
The fifth victim was also assaulted outdoors after drinking alcohol; McGovern pinned her down as she cried, taking advantage of her vulnerability.
The final girl was subjected to relentless verbal abuse, being called “fat” and “worthless,” with McGovern telling her to “kill herself.” She once locked herself in a bathroom to escape him, but he forcibly entered, attacked her, and rendered her unconscious.
She was also sexually assaulted while asleep and later raped on a gravel path despite her protests that she did not want sex.
Her suffering was only disclosed to authorities in March 2023.
Throughout the trial, it was revealed that McGovern’s behavior was so severe that he was placed on an indefinite sex offenders register.
The court also heard that a course involving discussions about violence, attended by one of the victims and facilitated by a Women’s Aid employee, raised concerns that led to police involvement.
Defending McGovern, Iain McSporran KC acknowledged that his client had behaved in an “appalling fashion,” though the court’s focus remained on the gravity of his crimes and the lasting impact on his victims.
