ROBERT LAING FROM SUNDERLAND CAUGHT WITH COVERT PICTURES OF SCHOOLGIRL IN SHOCKING CASE
In November 2020, a disturbing case emerged involving Robert Laing, a 31-year-old resident of Sunderland, who was found to have secretly stored explicit images of a schoolgirl and her friends. The incident drew significant attention from law enforcement and the local community alike.
Laing, a graduate in sports studies, was discovered to have a collection of 33 clandestine photographs depicting the teenage girl and her friends stored on his mobile device.
These images were taken without the victims' knowledge and included photos captured during their outings around Sunderland.
The police investigation revealed that Laing had used Facebook as a platform to communicate with the girl, sending her explicit images and engaging in sexually charged conversations.
The victim herself came across the disturbing messages during a routine check of her social media account while on a lunch break at school earlier in the year.
The content of the messages left her feeling shaken and deeply shocked, highlighting the emotional toll of the incident.
The police, upon seizing Laing’s phone, uncovered the photographs and messages, which confirmed the extent of his misconduct.
Prosecutor Alec Burns outlined to the court that Laing had made alarming statements to the girl, including a message where he expressed a desire to be her slave.
He also offered her a sum of £2,000 to perform a sexual act on him, further demonstrating his predatory behavior.
The court was shown videos in which Laing performed a sexual act himself, and he also sent a picture of the girl herself, accompanied by graphic descriptions of what he wished to do to her.
Following Laing’s arrest and subsequent search of his phone, investigators discovered additional images.
These included photographs of the girl and her friends taken during their outings around Sunderland, as well as images he had taken himself from her Facebook profile.
Laing denied sending the messages, claiming that his Facebook account had been hacked, but the evidence against him was substantial.
Laing pleaded guilty to charges of causing a child to watch a sexual act and engaging in sexual communication with a minor.
The court, presided over by Judge Sarah Mallett, sentenced him to 21 months in prison, suspended for two years, with requirements for rehabilitation.
Additionally, Laing was ordered to adhere to a sexual harm prevention order and to register as a sex offender for the next ten years, underscoring the seriousness of his offenses and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
