ROBERT JOHNSON CAUGHT IN EXETER SEX PREDATOR PLOT TARGETING 14-YEAR-OLDS
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Exeter, a man named Robert Johnson has been sentenced to prison after attempting to meet a minor for sexual activity, only to be caught in a police sting operation. The incident unfolded in January 2020, revealing the dangerous extent of online grooming and the efforts of law enforcement to combat such predatory behavior.
Johnson, a resident of Guys Road in Exeter, engaged in a series of explicit online conversations with what he believed was a 14-year-old boy named Harry.
These exchanges took place over popular social media platforms Grindr and Kik, where Johnson was grooming the minor with lurid messages that discussed bondage, oral sex, and other sexual acts.
The messages made it clear that Harry was only 14 years old, yet Johnson continued to pursue the contact, promising to teach the boy about sex and expressing intentions to meet in person.
According to court documents, Johnson arrived at a designated meeting point outside a Pizza Hut located at Exe Bridges in Exeter on the morning of January 17.
He was found in his Land Rover Discovery, equipped with various items including condoms, lubricant, handcuffs, and a spanking paddle—tools that indicated his intent to engage in sexual activity involving bondage and penetration.
The police had set up the operation after monitoring Johnson’s online activity and confirmed his plans to meet the minor.
During the police interview, Johnson was candid about his online interactions.
He admitted to contacting a real 14-year-old boy from Exeter, who had even sent him an explicit image of himself masturbating.
Johnson’s online communications also included a photograph of himself in underwear and a picture of a pair of handcuffs, further illustrating his intentions.
His messages explicitly discussed tying up the boy during their meeting, revealing a disturbing level of premeditation.
Law enforcement officials arrested Johnson in the parking lot outside the Pizza Hut at approximately 9 am.
The items found in his vehicle, along with his online activity, provided substantial evidence of grooming and intent to commit a child sex offence.
Johnson was charged with arranging a child sex offence and attempting to meet a child following grooming.
He also faced additional charges related to sexual communication with a minor and possession of an indecent image.
At Exeter Crown Court, Judge Timothy Rose sentenced Johnson to two years and eight months in prison.
The judge emphasized the severity of Johnson’s actions, stating, “You drove to a meeting equipped to have penetrative sexual activity with a person you thought to be a 14-year-old boy and that can only be met by immediate imprisonment.” Furthermore, Johnson was ordered to register as a sex offender for life and was issued a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which prohibits any future contact with children.
The prosecution was led by Mr.
Joss Ticehurst, who highlighted the manipulative nature of Johnson’s online grooming and the danger posed to minors.
In his police interview, Johnson was open about his online contact with the Exeter-based minor, revealing that he had received explicit images and had been actively engaged in grooming behavior.
The case underscores the ongoing threat of online predators and the importance of vigilant law enforcement efforts to protect vulnerable minors from exploitation.
