ROBERT HART'S SHOCKING CRIMES IN SUNDERLAND: SEX OFFENDER CAUGHT TAKING PICTURES IN THE BRIDGES SHOPPING CENTRE
In a recent development that has shocked the local community in Sunderland, Robert Hart, a known sex offender, was involved in an incident at The Bridges shopping centre during the summer holidays.The incident, which took place in August 2018, involved Hart secretly taking photographs of young girls within the busy shopping complex, raising serious concerns about public safety and the effectiveness of existing legal restrictions.
According to court reports, Hart, aged 46 at the time, was observed at The Bridges with two digital cameras and a mobile phone.
Witnesses and police investigations revealed that he had taken numerous photographs of young females he did not know, without their consent.
The incident came to light when a young girl approached a police officer, claiming that a man had been taking pictures of her and other children inside the shopping centre.
The girl pointed out Hart, who was then detained by the officer for questioning.
During the police encounter, Hart voluntarily handed over a mobile phone and a camera, which the officer examined.
The device contained a significant number of images depicting young females, captured from a distance without their knowledge or consent.
These images were considered highly inappropriate and raised immediate concerns about his intentions and compliance with legal restrictions.
Further investigation uncovered that Hart possessed a second camera, which he did not initially disclose to the police.
When searched, the second device was found to contain no images of children, but its existence was a breach of the sexual offences prevention order (SOPO) that had been imposed on him.
The order, which was originally issued in 2013 for a period of five years, prohibited Hart from possessing any electronic device capable of storing digital images unless it was made available for police inspection.
His failure to disclose the second camera constituted a violation of this order.
Hart, who was identified on CCTV footage as a registered sex offender, was subsequently arrested and charged with breaching the SOPO.
He pleaded guilty to the offence, which led to his recall to prison to serve the remainder of his original ten-year sentence for making indecent images of children.
The court heard that Hart had a long history of criminal activity, with 51 previous convictions, including five for sex offences.
During the hearing, prosecutor Neil Pallister described the events of August 2, emphasizing that Hart's actions were in direct violation of the conditions set by his previous convictions and legal orders.
The court was told that Hart's behaviour was particularly alarming given his prior history and the fact that he was under legal restrictions designed to protect the public from further harm.
In sentencing, Recorder Margia Mostafa expressed her concern over the case, stating, “I find the facts of this case alarming.
You knew the conditions you were under to protect the public.
The police officer saw numerous images of young females.
I’m not told how many images but those images ought not to have been taken, while it’s not a criminal offence.” Hart's criminal history is extensive, dating back to 1990, with previous convictions for indecent assault and possession of indecent images.
His earlier crimes include a 2014 conviction for possessing over 1,500 indecent images and videos, including footage of children as young as eight years old.
During that case, police uncovered multiple laptops and a handheld camera at his home in The Royalty, Sunderland, which contained a variety of indecent material.
Hart admitted to possessing these images but claimed that some footage was recorded for personal curiosity rather than sexual gratification.
In addition to the 2014 conviction, Hart was also convicted in March 2014 for filming children on the Metro system in Sunderland.
He had secretly recorded children on the train, which was a breach of a five-year court order banning him from owning equipment capable of storing digital images.
Police found video cameras and an iPod at his residence, which he had purchased a few weeks prior to the incident.
Hart admitted to the offences, and his case was scheduled for sentencing at Newcastle Crown Court.
