RICHARD WEST FROM HARTLEPOOL SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF YOUNG GIRL
In January 2021, a disturbing case emerged from Hartlepool involving the sexual abuse of a young girl by a local resident, Richard West.The heinous acts committed by West, a 65-year-old man residing in Grosvenor Gardens, Hartlepool, only came to light after the young victim found the courage to disclose the abuse she had endured.
The revelations prompted a thorough investigation, culminating in a court hearing at Teesside Crown Court where West faced justice for his actions.
According to the prosecution led by Philip Morley, West subjected the young girl to multiple instances of sexual assault, acts which were described as 'horrific' by the court.
The details of the abuse painted a grim picture of a man who exploited the innocence of a child on several occasions.
The court was told that the trauma inflicted on the victim was profound, with her mother suffering immense emotional distress as a result.
During the proceedings, Mr.
Morley read aloud extracts from the victim's mother’s impact statement, which vividly conveyed the devastating effects of West’s actions.
The mother expressed her anguish, stating, “He has taken away a huge part of her little girl’s life by what he has done.
My little girl is at an age where the memories and nightmares of a child being sexually assaulted will stay with her for life.
A sentence she never asked for or deserved.” She also shared her feelings of guilt, blaming herself for not being able to protect her daughter, and described how the abuse had shattered her trust in others.
The mother emphasized the lifelong scars left by the assault, saying, “I have lost my life, my children have lost theirs, my little girl has to live with this for the rest of her life – the fact she was sexually assaulted as a child.” West, who was arrested following the investigation, initially claimed to officers that he had no sexual interest in children.
However, he ultimately pleaded guilty to three charges of sexual assault on a child under 13.
The court heard that West’s behavior was both disgraceful and deviant, with Judge Stephen Ashurst condemning his actions.
The judge remarked, “You chose to behave in a disgraceful way towards that young girl.
What you did was seriously deviant and happened on a number of occasions.
It has left the victim distressed and traumatised by what happened to her.” In addition to the five-year prison sentence, West was subjected to further legal restrictions.
The court imposed an indefinite sexual harm prevention order and mandated that he register as a sex offender.
These measures are intended to protect the community and prevent any future harm from West, who now faces the consequences of his reprehensible actions in Hartlepool.
