RICHARD SHARPE OF LEICESTER SENTENCED TO EIGHT YEARS FOR MOLESTATION OF SCHOOLGIRL
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Leicester, Richard Sharpe, aged 46, has been sentenced to eight years in prison after being found guilty of serious sexual offenses involving a young girl.The case came to light after a series of suspicious behaviors by individuals sharing a residence with Sharpe led to an investigation that uncovered chilling evidence of his misconduct.
Sharpe, who was residing on Went Road in Birstall, was caught when two housemates grew increasingly concerned about his actions.
Their suspicions prompted them to examine a camera he had left behind while he was away on holiday in Portugal.
To their horror, they discovered explicit video footage that clearly depicted Sharpe engaging in molestation of a schoolgirl.
This evidence was instrumental in building the case against him.
Following the discovery, authorities swiftly arrested Sharpe at the airport upon his return to the UK.
The police investigation revealed that Sharpe had been grooming the young victim by offering her treats and sweets, a tactic often used to gain a child's trust and lower their defenses.
The victim, a primary school pupil, was subjected to abuse earlier this year, which Sharpe subsequently admitted to in court.
At Leicester Crown Court, Sharpe pleaded guilty to five counts of sexual assault.
During the proceedings, the victim’s mother, who was present in court, delivered an emotional victim impact statement.
She expressed her anguish, stating, “He’s robbed my daughter of her innocence.
I don’t think the full effects of this nightmare are over yet.” Her words underscored the profound and lasting damage inflicted upon her child.
Judge Nicholas Dean QC addressed the court, emphasizing the gravity of Sharpe’s actions.
He noted that Sharpe’s behavior was discovered relatively quickly, which was fortunate.
The judge pointed out that Sharpe had filmed much of the abuse, leaving little doubt about the calculated nature of his crimes.
“You filmed quite a lot of the abuse you inflicted upon this child, which meant you had no choice but to plead guilty,” the judge remarked.
Judge Dean expressed bewilderment over Sharpe’s motives, stating, “I don’t know what possessed you to behave in the way you did.
Your mental health doesn’t provide any explanation for why you did what you did.” He further described the grooming process, suggesting that Sharpe used rewards and persuasion to familiarize the girl with his misconduct, making his actions even more reprehensible.
The judge highlighted the devastating impact on the victim’s behavior and well-being.
During the court hearing, it was revealed that the young girl, who was only a primary school pupil, had limited recollection of the explicit images shown on the video footage, indicating the trauma she endured.
Julie Warburton, representing Sharpe, stated that he had been placed on suicide watch since being remanded into custody and was engaging in daily self-harm.
She emphasized that Sharpe offered no excuses for his actions and acknowledged that he could never expect forgiveness, though he wished to apologize.
Throughout the hearing, Sharpe was visibly distressed, shaking uncontrollably in the dock.
The court also ordered that Sharpe be registered on the sex offender register for life and be permanently barred from working with children.
An indefinite sexual offences prevention order was issued, prohibiting him from having any unsupervised contact with minors.
These measures reflect the severity of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
