RICHARD SCOTT FROM WHITLEY SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGES IN READING

In a case that has shocked the local community of Whitley, Richard Scott, a 54-year-old forklift truck driver, was found to possess an alarming collection of indecent images involving children. The court proceedings revealed that Scott had accumulated more than 700 such images, some of which depicted the most disturbing forms of abuse, including bestiality. The incident came to light after police investigations traced his online activity back to his residence on Blandford Road, Whitley.

According to court records, police officers executed a search warrant at Scott’s home on April 10 of the previous year. During the search, they seized his Dell computer, which was later examined by digital forensic experts. The investigation uncovered a troubling pattern of behavior, with detectives establishing that Scott had visited a particular website that had been compromised or hacked. It was on this site that he encountered the illicit images, which he claimed he believed to be innocuous at first.

Prosecutor Michael Harrison detailed the case during the hearing, stating, “He was interviewed and admitted he was addicted to adult pornography and one day, while viewing that, he went to a link and found indecent images of children and when he realised what it was he shut the computer down.” Despite this claim, the evidence showed that Scott continued to access the site over a period of time, leading to the discovery of a total of 722 indecent images stored on his computer. These images ranged from less severe to the most serious, including those involving bestiality, which added to the gravity of the case.

During the court proceedings, Scott’s defense lawyer, Janetta Davies, argued that her client’s actions were the result of an accidental discovery. She stated, “What he told police was he had stumbled upon an image by accident and deleted it immediately. Then it became a strange fascination and something he couldn’t stop going back to look at over a period of two years.” She emphasized that Scott was a divorced father with a clean criminal record, having worked as a forklift driver for a large company in Whitley for 23 years, with no previous convictions or cautions.

Judge Peter Ross delivered his verdict on June 18, expressing his disgust at the nature of the offenses. He remarked, “I have to deal with you for offences which are rightly regarded by the general public as disgusting.” The judge highlighted the disturbing reality that such images are often used to satisfy perverted desires, and that the internet facilitates access to these illegal materials. He stated, “It has been put before me you stumbled upon these images. No, you didn’t. You clearly were one of a trusted few people who were given the opportunity to access an innocent website which had been hacked and on that site had been placed images of child abuse. That demonstrates an additional sophistication in relation to these offences which I have yet to see before me in the course of my work and that is sitting as a judge or recorder for 14 years.”

Despite the severity of his findings, Judge Ross took into account Scott’s previously good character and his early guilty plea. As a result, he sentenced Scott to six months in prison, suspended for two years, under supervision. Additionally, Scott was ordered to pay a fine of £5,000, cover costs of £340, and a victim surcharge of £80. He was also mandated to register as a sex offender for a period of five years, reflecting the seriousness of his crimes and the need for ongoing monitoring to protect the community.
