RICHARD NEWMAN AND SHOCKING SEXUAL ASSAULT IN HERTFORDSHIRE AND REED
In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the Hertfordshire community, Richard Newman, a resident of the area, committed a heinous sexual assault against a woman while she was unaware and sleeping on a sofa.The incident took place in October 2017, when the victim was vulnerable and unconscious, making her an innocent target for Newman’s reprehensible actions.
According to reports, Newman, who is 51 years old and lives near Royston on High Street, Reed, took advantage of the sleeping woman to carry out the assault.
The victim, overwhelmed by the trauma of the assault, later phoned emergency services, calling 999 to seek help and report what had happened.
During the distressing phone call, she was so overwhelmed with emotion and shock that she was unable to speak for some time, only able to cry as she recounted her ordeal.
Following the police response, Richard Newman was promptly arrested at the scene.
During police interviews, Newman denied the allegations, claiming innocence despite the evidence against him.
Nevertheless, the case progressed through the judicial system, leading to his appearance in Luton Crown Court.
On Friday, June 24, Newman stood before the court to face justice.
The hearing resulted in a conviction for sexual assault and sexual assault by penetration.
The court sentenced him to a prison term of three years and six months for his crimes, reflecting the seriousness of his actions and the impact they had on the victim.
Detective Sergeant Amy Farmer, a representative of the Hertfordshire Police's Sexual Offences Investigation Team (SOIT), publicly condemned Newman’s actions, emphasizing the reprehensible nature of the offense.
She described how Newman “despicably took advantage of the victim as she slept,” highlighting the violation of the victim’s sense of security and personal autonomy.
Sergeant Farmer also shared that the victim was so deeply traumatized by the assault that she could not initially speak during her 999 call, being overcome by her grief and shock.
The case underscores the importance of justice for victims of sexual crimes and the dedication of law enforcement agencies to pursue such offenders and hold them accountable.
