RICHARD GRAHAM AND SHOCKING SEX OFFENCES IN MANCHESTER AND BURY
A disturbing series of crimes involving a man named Richard Graham has shocked the communities of Manchester and Bury. The 33-year-old offender, who has a known history of repeatedly exposing himself, targeted a young girl twice over consecutive days, leaving her deeply traumatized and frightened.
The first incident occurred during the late afternoon hours in Bury, where a group of three children, aged 10, 10, and 13, were playing on a tree swing in an outdoor area.
According to police reports, one of the children observed Graham standing nearby and noticed him engaging in bizarre behavior with his genitals.
The child then alerted the others by shouting, “small willy,” which caused Graham to flee the scene quickly.
Graham did not remove his trousers nor speak to the children, but his actions were clearly perceived as inappropriate and disturbing.
Although initially not reported to authorities, the children later expressed their feelings of fear and being 'freaked out,' with one of the boys mentioning that he thought the incident was funny at first but then became scared.
The following day, on August 8, at approximately 5:30 pm, the alleged victim—a girl who previously saw Graham's actions—was attempting to visit her friend's house.
She knocked on the door but received no reply and decided to leave.
As she was walking away, she saw Graham hiding behind a low brick wall, recognizing him immediately.
Her growing fear prompted her to go to the back of the house, but she soon discovered her friend was not at home.
Fearing she might be trapped or 'cornered,' she began to walk back up the path, only to see Graham move from behind the wall to an area where he once stood.
According to court testimony, as she proceeded past him, Graham exposed himself once again, raising his eyebrows and smirking in a manner described as malicious and intimidating.
The girl, overwhelmed by fear, started to run, but their eyes met during this frantic escape.
Graham’s actions, coupled with his smirk and the eye contact, increased her distress.
An officer described his movements as gesturing masturbatory behavior.
She later recounted that Graham appeared to be laughing and showing no remorse, and her detailed description of his eyes and demeanor painted a picture of someone truly frightening.
The police swiftly launched an investigation once informed, collecting CCTV footage that captured Graham riding his bicycle home from work.
The footage revealed that he deliberately took a detour toward the area where the children had been playing, which further linked him to the incidents.
In a statement, the mother of the girl explained the profound impact the events had on her daughter.
She revealed that her daughter had lost trust in adult men and now experiences anxiety whenever she sees a man on a bike.
The girl is currently undergoing therapy to cope with the trauma.
Her mother emphasized that her child's sense of safety and innocence had been shattered by Graham’s actions, highlighting the severity of the emotional and psychological damage inflicted.
Graham is known to have a troubling criminal history, with seven prior convictions for similar offenses involving exposure, targeting prepubescent girls.
His persistent pattern over time underscores a dangerous predatory behavior that authorities have sought to address.
During the court hearing, the defense attorney Aubrey Sampson acknowledged that Graham’s guilty plea was the only mitigating factor, as it prevented the children from having to testify in a trial.
The defense also pointed out that Graham could not offer a rational explanation for his repeated offenses and warned that continuing such behavior would likely result in increasingly long prison sentences.
Judge Mark Savill delivered his sentencing remarks with clear disapproval, stating that Graham’s actions caused significant harm to a vulnerable 10-year-old girl.
He condemned the defendant for his apparent lack of remorse and suggested that Graham’s conduct was driven by sexual excitement—behaviors he knew were wrong yet continued to indulge in.
The judge explained that he was unable to impose an extended sentence under current Sentencing Council guidelines but classified Graham as a 'dangerous offender.' As part of his penalty, Graham was sentenced to over three years in prison, specifically three years and two months.
He was also ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register and to be subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, both of which will remain in effect indefinitely.
Following the verdict, Police Constable David Green of the Greater Manchester Police’s Bury North Neighbourhood Policing Team expressed his gratitude to the brave young victims for their resilience and cooperation, which enabled justice to be served.
Green reaffirmed the police force’s commitment to protecting victims of sexual offenses and emphasized that such behaviors would not be tolerated in Manchester or Bury.
He assured the public that the police work closely with specialized agencies to monitor offenders and ensure they are held accountable for their actions, including lifelong surveillance in many cases.
