RICHARD GILES FROM TORQUAY SENTENCED FOR CHILD GROOMING AND SEXUAL PREDATION

In April 2019, Richard Giles, a resident of Torquay, made headlines following his arrest and subsequent sentencing related to serious allegations of online child grooming and sexual predation.

Giles, who has since returned to live in Torquay after a period of legal proceedings, was involved in a disturbing case that highlighted the dangers of online predators and the importance of vigilant child protection efforts.

Back in February 2018, Giles was caught by members of the UK database paedophile hunters, an organization dedicated to exposing individuals attempting to engage in illegal activities involving minors.

His arrest came after a series of incriminating online interactions that revealed his intentions to meet a young girl for sexual purposes.

Giles believed he was communicating with a nine-year-old girl named Clare through chat sites, but in reality, he was engaging with members of an online child protection team posing as the child.

During police investigations, Giles admitted that he had invited the girl, whom he believed was in London, to travel to his home in Devon, specifically in Torquay, with the intent of playing Monopoly.

However, chat logs and digital evidence painted a far more sinister picture.

It was clear that Giles was not merely interested in innocent games; he was actively seeking to engage in sexual activity with the girl.

To conceal his true intentions, he used a false name and profile, which facilitated the sexualized conversations that ultimately led to his arrest.

Giles provided an address belonging to his next-door neighbor in Torquay, where he planned to meet the girl.

His plans were thwarted when he was spotted by paedophile hunters standing in the street, waiting for the girl to arrive.

The group’s intervention prevented any contact from taking place, and Giles was detained by authorities shortly thereafter.

At the age of 24, Giles, of Davis Avenue in Torquay, faced serious charges.

He pleaded guilty to attempting to meet a child following grooming with the intent of engaging in sexual activity.

His actions prompted a swift judicial response.

Judge Geoffrey Mercer, QC, presided over his case at Exeter Crown Court and sentenced him to 18 months in prison.

Additionally, Giles was placed on the sex offenders register and subjected to a monitoring order that would allow police to oversee his future internet activity.

The judge emphasized the gravity of the offense, stating, “You arranged to meet a girl in the belief she was nine.

You undoubtedly believed she was nine.

You wanted to meet her, and your intention was clearly sexual and was not confined, as you suggested, to playing Monopoly.

This offense was aggravated by the fact that the girl was not simply under age but was said to be as young as nine.

The sentence cannot be suspended.

It is too serious and the concern you raise is too great.” Prosecutor Mr.

Gordon Richings detailed the timeline of Giles’s online activities.

He explained that Giles first made contact with a decoy profile named Clare in December of the previous year.

Within just 11 days, Giles had arranged for her to visit him in Torquay.

During their conversations, Giles used the alias Ben Jones and sent a series of sexual messages, despite Clare repeatedly stating she was only nine years old.

In one exchange, he commented on her “nice tight body,” and when she reiterated her age, he responded, “at least I’m right about the rest.” Giles’s plans culminated in an attempt to meet the girl just before Christmas.

However, his intentions were exposed when members of the UK Database paedophile hunting group confronted him in the street.

During questioning, Giles admitted to having been in contact with ten young girls online, although police investigations found evidence of only one chat with a girl on a site called Teen Chat for Teens.

Authorities also discovered a pair of child’s knickers at his residence, further implicating him in the case.

Following his conviction, Giles’s case served as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by online predators and the importance of community vigilance in protecting children from exploitation and abuse.

His return to living in Torquay marks a chapter in his life that continues to be under scrutiny, with law enforcement maintaining strict monitoring to prevent any further offenses.
