RICHARD GILBERT AND SHOCKING CHILD ABUSE IN GLOUCESTER
A man described as a manipulative and dangerous predator has been sentenced to eight years in prison following a series of troubling sexual offenses involving a teenage girl in Gloucester.Richard Gilbert, a 30-year-old resident of Quenney's Close, was convicted on six counts of engaging in sexual activity with a minor between September 2021 and spring 2022.
The court found that Gilbert had a predatory pattern, which included not only sexual misconduct but also an attempted abduction of the young girl.
The conviction followed a series of police investigations that revealed Gilbert’s persistent and manipulative behavior.
According to court reports, Gilbert had previously admitted to abducting the girl.
The sentencing judge, Neil Millard, condemned Gilbert as a "dangerous predator" and an "abusive child sex offender," underscoring the severity of his actions.
The investigation was sparked when the girl’s mother became suspicious of her daughter’s interactions with Gilbert.
In August 2021, the mother observed her daughter returning home with gifts from Gilbert, raising immediate concerns.
She subsequently reported her suspicions to authorities, leading to Gilbert’s initial arrest.
At that time, Gilbert denied any sexual contact with the girl and was released under investigation under strict conditions that forbade him from making contact with either the girl or her family.
Despite these conditions, Gilbert disregarded the restrictions.
Prosecutor James Haskell explained that Gilbert continued to pursue a relationship with the girl, which alarmed her mother enough to contact the police again.
Following this, the girl was interviewed and disclosed that she had engaged in sexual activity with Gilbert on three separate occasions.
Gilbert was re-arrested and again released under similar strict conditions, but he did not cease his inappropriate conduct.
The court heard that Gilbert later went on to orchestrate a plan to run away together with the girl.
This plan culminated in Gilbert abducting her and holding her in a room at lodgings in Cheltenham, where police eventually found her.
During the police interview, she presented herself as Gilbert’s girlfriend.
In her testimony, the girl recounted that the relationship began when Gilbert kissed her at a social event.
She described feeling threatened and intimidated by Gilbert, especially when he displayed jealousy towards her interactions with male friends from school.
She recounted an incident at the park, where Gilbert sent her threatening messages after spotting her with friends, making her scared and uncomfortable.
She also revealed that Gilbert would access her social media accounts and block her friends, further isolating her.
During the court proceedings, Gilbert’s defense attorney, Jason Coulter, argued that the plan to run away together was “utter lunacy” and dismissed Gilbert’s feelings as reckless, yet genuine, albeit wholly inappropriate.
Judge Neil Millard addressed Gilbert directly, describing him as a “dangerous predator” who poses a significant risk to the community.
As part of his sentence, Gilbert was warned that he would not be eligible for parole until he had served at least two-thirds of his term.
Additionally, he was handed an indefinite sexual harm prevention order, required to register as a sex offender indefinitely, and was permanently banned from employment or activities involving children.
