RICHARD COURAGE EXETER PENSIONER CAUGHT IN POLICE STING TRYING TO MEET 11-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN EAST DEVON

A 75-year-old retired businessman from Exeter, Richard Courage, has been sentenced to prison after attempting to arrange a sexual encounter with an 11-year-old girl, only to be caught in a police undercover operation.

The incident highlights the dangers of online predators and the importance of vigilant law enforcement efforts to protect vulnerable children.

According to court reports, Courage believed he was communicating with a woman who had access to an 11-year-old girl, but in reality, he was engaging with an undercover police officer.

The police had set up the sting to catch individuals seeking to exploit minors online.

Courage's messages quickly turned sexual in nature, with him fantasizing about having sex with the young girl.

His intentions became clear when he booked a hotel room in East Devon, specifically on the outskirts of Exeter, planning to meet the girl and carry out his disturbing plans.

He had arranged the hotel booking for the night of August 10, 2022, but at the last moment, Courage called off the meeting, claiming he was suffering from Covid-19.

Despite cancelling the physical encounter, he continued to communicate with the undercover officer through online messages, revealing his continued interest in the illicit act.

His online exchanges made it evident that he intended to have sex with the girl, although he expressed a desire to minimize her discomfort, indicating a disturbing level of premeditation and concern for his own perceived ease.

Authorities traced Courage through the details of his hotel reservation and subsequently arrested him.

During the search of his property, police discovered a small collection of child images on his computer, all at the lowest level of sexual posing involving girls aged between seven and sixteen.

Additionally, a dismantled shotgun was found in his vehicle, which could be reassembled and required a firearm certificate, raising further concerns about his potential for violence.

Courage, who is known to have no prior criminal record, faced multiple charges including arranging or commissioning a child sex offence, possession of indecent images of children, and possession of a firearm without a license.

His defense lawyer, Mr.

Jason Beal, emphasized Courage's otherwise clean record and his positive contributions to the community.

He also highlighted Courage's caring responsibilities for his wife, who is in poor health, and argued that Courage did not have Covid when he canceled the meeting but used the illness as an excuse after realizing he was crossing a moral line.

Judge Anna Richardson presided over the case at Exeter Crown Court, where she sentenced Courage to three years and four months in prison.

She also ordered him to be placed on the sex offenders’ register for life and imposed a sexual harm prevention order, which restricts his future access to children and the internet.

The judge described the attempted arrangement as akin to child rape, underscoring the severity of the offense, but acknowledged Courage's lack of previous convictions and his decision to abandon the plan when he recognized the shift from digital fantasy to real-world action.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by online predators and the critical role of law enforcement in safeguarding children from exploitation and abuse, especially in communities like Exeter and East Devon where such incidents can have profound impacts on families and the wider community.
