RICHARD CLARK FROM DURHAM CAUGHT IN ONLINE PAEDOPHILE STING

A man named Richard Clark, who previously served time in prison for sexual offenses involving a minor, found himself embroiled in a recent online sting operation in Durham.

Clark’s past conviction dates back to March 2016, when he was sentenced at Cambridge Crown Court to four years in prison for engaging in sexual activities with a 13-year-old girl he met online in 2014.

His earlier case detailed how he arranged to meet the girl in person, visited her school, and developed a romantic relationship with her, during which he persistently asked her for sex.

Although she refused his sexual advances, Clark did give her a body massage, but no further physical contact occurred.

Despite denying the charge of sexual activity with a child, Clark was convicted after a trial.

His sentence included not only the four-year prison term but also an eight-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) and indefinite notification requirements as a registered sex offender, as part of his 2016 punishment.

Fast forward to this year, just two months after the expiry of his SHPO, Clark was caught in a new online incident.

During a hearing at Durham Crown Court, it was revealed that Clark, now 39 and residing on Chillerton Way, Wingate, used an alias, North East 33, which he had not registered with the police, to contact a profile he believed belonged to a 14-year-old girl.

Unbeknownst to him, the profile was a decoy created by an online paedophile-hunting vigilante group, whose members are all over 18.

Prosecutor Tabitha Buck explained that Clark initiated the conversation by discussing his work as a truck driver.

The decoy profile, claiming to be a 14-year-old girl at school, made it clear she was only 14.

Clark responded by saying he didn’t mind her age and asked if she liked “older guys.” He complimented her appearance on her profile and expressed interest in “naughty chat,” then went further to ask if she “played with herself.” Clark suggested they move their conversation to WhatsApp so she could see him, providing her with his mobile number.

Once on WhatsApp, which was registered in his name, Clark continued to express his affection, saying he liked her and wished he could see more of her.

The conversation persisted until Clark abruptly blocked the profile.

The vigilante group, which had set up the decoy profile, passed the details of the exchanges to the police.

Clark was arrested at Durham police station on May 21, where he denied any wrongdoing during an interview.

He appeared before magistrates on May 22, charged with attempted sexual communication with a child, and maintained this plea during his initial crown court appearance in June, when a trial date was scheduled.

However, on October 17, Clark changed his plea to guilty during a court hearing.

The case was adjourned to allow for a background report from the Probation Service.

During the sentencing hearing, Dr.

Chris Wood, representing Clark, highlighted that the recent offending occurred over a short period and that Clark had not attempted to hide his messages.

He acknowledged that Clark initially failed to admit his guilt but later expressed remorse and indicated his intention to change his plea.

Dr.

Wood also pointed out that Clark had complied with the previous SHPO and that there was no victim involved in the recent incident.

Judge Nathan Adams noted that Clark’s offending history was “particularly significant” in this case.

He emphasized that although Clark had adhered to the SHPO after his 2016 conviction, he resumed similar behavior shortly after the order expired, believing he was communicating with a 14-year-old girl.

Fortunately, the profile was a decoy, and the police were alerted immediately.

The judge warned that if the profile had belonged to a real 14-year-old, the potential harm could have been severe.

The timing of the offense was considered an aggravating factor.

Given Clark’s previous conviction, the judge decided that only an immediate prison sentence was appropriate, and he sentenced Clark to 12 months in prison, which he could not suspend.

While expressing sympathy for Clark’s family, the judge stated that Clark’s actions had caused harm to them.

Additionally, Clark was subjected to a new ten-year SHPO and was ordered to register as a sex offender for the same period.
