RICHARD BODDY OF ST HELENS SENTENCED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY AND ABUSE AT LOCAL SCHOOL
In September 2002, Richard Boddy, a primary school teacher from St Helens, was sentenced to three years in prison after being found guilty of a series of disturbing offences involving his pupils.The case uncovered a pattern of heinous misconduct, including the filming of semi-pornographic videos of children during class hours, which has shocked the local community and raised serious concerns about safeguarding in schools.
According to court reports, Boddy, aged 28 at the time, used a camcorder to secretly record pupils while they were engaged in classroom activities.
One particularly distressing incident involved Boddy zooming in on a 10-year-old girl’s chest after her blouse unintentionally fell open as she leaned over her desk.
These recordings were part of a larger collection of illicit material discovered during police investigations.
The investigation was triggered when a computer engineer visited Boddy’s flat on Dentons Green Lane, St Helens, to install new software.
During the visit, the engineer noticed suspicious content on Boddy’s computer and alerted authorities.
A subsequent search of Boddy’s residence revealed more than 5,000 child pornography images stored on his computer, along with the footage from his camcorder and various items of clothing.
Many of these items, including swimming costumes and girls’ underwear, had been taken from pupils’ bags or retrieved from the school’s lost property box.
Prosecutor Paul Becker outlined the extent of Boddy’s misconduct, which included making indecent pseudo-images of children and filming indecent videos.
The police interviews with children from the Haydock school where Boddy taught revealed further disturbing details.
It was established that Boddy had repeatedly groped a 10-year-old girl after pretending to tickle her, and he also engaged in gross indecency with a nine-year-old girl after dancing with her.
These acts demonstrated a pattern of predatory behavior directed at vulnerable children.
During the court proceedings, Boddy admitted to 21 counts of indecent assault and child pornography offences, including 15 counts of making indecent images, one count of producing an indecent video, four counts of indecent assault against the same 10-year-old girl, and one count of gross indecency.
His lack of previous convictions did not prevent the severity of the sentence handed down.
Further evidence presented during the trial revealed that Boddy had even advertised his services as a babysitter within his apartment complex, raising serious concerns about his intentions and the safety of children in his community.
Police also discovered that Boddy’s flat contained a collection of inappropriate items, including clothing and swimwear taken from children.
Judge Denis Clark, presiding over the case, sentenced Boddy to three years in prison, with an extended license period of five years.
The judge expressed his belief that Boddy posed a significant danger to children and accused him of deliberately becoming a teacher to satisfy his perverted desires.
In his remarks, Judge Clark stated, “You were teaching children while at the same time compiling a semi-pornographic video of a young child.
You insinuated yourself into teaching, I have no doubt, to gratify your sinister lust.
I feel in your sentence I must reflect society’s revulsion at your conduct.” He further condemned Boddy’s actions, emphasizing the chilling fact that he had advertised himself as a babysitter, which was particularly alarming given his criminal history.
As part of his sentence, Boddy was disqualified from working with children indefinitely and was placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life, marking a severe restriction on his future interactions with minors.
