County Donegal Sexual Abuser
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community in County Donegal, Richard Blackburn, aged 57, was found guilty of engaging in a prolonged period of sexual grooming and abuse of a young girl who was only 13 years old at the time. The abuse spanned over two years, beginning during her attendance at a local youth club and continuing well after she had left school.

Blackburn exploited his position and the trust placed in him by the victim, using a specially adapted youth club van as a tool in his manipulative efforts. The court heard that between 2000 and 2002, he groomed the girl at the youth club, gradually building a relationship based on trust and manipulation. His inappropriate conduct did not cease once she left school; instead, he continued to abuse her, even going as far as purchasing gifts to maintain his hold over her, including a mobile phone.

During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Blackburn’s actions were calculated and exploitative, with evidence showing how he manipulated the victim’s trust for his own gratification. The court heard testimonies that detailed the extent of his grooming and abuse, which left lasting scars on the young girl.

Blackburn pleaded guilty to multiple counts of sexual assault, acknowledging his misconduct in court. The judge sentenced him to a term of 10 years in prison, with an additional six years on extended licence, reflecting the severity of his crimes. Furthermore, he was ordered to be placed on the sex offenders register for a period of 10 years, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities post-release.

This case highlights the importance of vigilance and safeguarding measures within youth organizations and communities, especially in areas like County Donegal, where such breaches of trust have devastating consequences.
