Manchester canal basin rapist ignored his victim’s pleas to stop attack A man named Ricardo Rodrigues-Fortes-Gomes has been convicted of a sexual attack in Manchester. The court found him guilty of two counts of rape and sentenced him to six years in a young offenders’ institution.
The attack occurred at approximately 07:00 on July 23 at the top of stairs leading to a canal path in the Manchester city centre's Piccadilly Basin area.
The victim was an 18-year-old woman who screamed and begged him to stop, saying: “Stop, it’s not right!” Police responded after a witness heard her pleas and saw her pleading with the attacker.
Rodrigues-Fortes-Gomes ignored her calls to cease and continued the assault for some time before fleeing the scene as officers arrived.
He was arrested later that morning.
The court also ordered him to sign the sex offenders’ register for life and pay a £170 victim surcharge.
Police spokesperson Det Con Dave Jones stated, “Rodrigues-Fortes-Gomes is now behind bars and unable to force himself upon people for his own selfish sexual gratification.
Not only did he subject his victim to a horrifically prolonged attack, he made her endure the distress of a trial by denying his involvement.” The victim's pleas and the witness testimony played a significant role in his conviction.
The attacker’s address is listed as Old Hall Drive, Gorton.
