RHYS DAVIES, THE WELSH SEX OFFENDER, SENTENCED IN CARDIFF AND SPAIN FOR CHILD ABUSE
In July 2003, a disturbing case involving Rhys Davies, a property developer from Cardiff, came to light as he was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for a series of heinous sexual offenses against young boys.Davies, aged 63, had a troubling history of grooming his victims through the exchange of expensive gifts and inviting them on foreign holidays, including trips to his holiday home in Spain.
His manipulative tactics targeted boys as young as nine, exploiting their innocence for his own perverted gratification.
Following initial allegations, Davies fled to Spain to evade justice.
His escape was short-lived, as he was later convicted by a Spanish court for sex assaults on two other boys, receiving a nine-year prison sentence.
After serving time in Spain, Davies was released and returned to Cardiff, where authorities in South Wales swiftly apprehended him on multiple charges of sexual abuse.
During the trial at Cardiff Crown Court, prosecutor Caroline Rees detailed the disturbing nature of Davies' misconduct.
She revealed that Davies had made his young victims sleep in his bed and had carried out sexual assaults on them.
When questioned by police upon his arrest, Davies expressed remorse, stating, "I thought this was settled out in Spain.
I wouldn’t have come back if I had known.
I don’t do these things because I want to — it’s an illness." Davies, who resides in Ely, Cardiff, pleaded guilty to eight counts of indecent assault involving five boys.
His defense, led by Ieuan Bennett, highlighted Davies’ poor health, noting he suffers from respiratory disease and spinal issues.
Evidence showed Davies had to use a crutch when walking into court, and his lawyer expressed concern that Davies believed he might die in prison due to his health and the severity of his sentence.
Bennett also conveyed Davies’ remorse, acknowledging that his apology might be too late.
Judge David Wynn Morgan sentenced Davies to two and a half years, commenting that he would have imposed a longer sentence had Davies not already served time in Spain.
The judge condemned Davies’ manipulative tactics, which included offering money, electrical equipment, and foreign holidays to lure his victims.
He emphasized the betrayal of trust by Davies, who exploited the innocence of boys and their families, describing him as a dangerous and predatory paedophile driven by his own perverted desires.
Adding to the gravity of Davies’ criminal record, it was revealed that in October 1996, he was jailed in Spain for 13 years after admitting to multiple charges of child sexual abuse.
The court heard that Davies had molested children aged between three and twelve, causing lasting trauma.
The court described how the victims suffered from nightmares and emotional distress as a result of his actions, and Davies admitted to 14 charges, including attempted rape, further underscoring the extent of his predatory behavior across borders.
